AgEnTsMiTh
A Few Facts The film is Aramaic AND Latin. The Vatican put up a stink wanting to view it for there approval (I thought the bible said to be no part of the world yet the vatican wants its hand in everything?) The Jewish leaders wanted to view it because Gibson being a big star, are afraid its going to send a bad message and want the movie to be banned, never seen. Which is funny because I guess they want the Holy Scriptures burned as well because it contains accounts about the Jews as well. There afraid there is going to be a massive attack against them. They actualy said its going to happen because of the film. Its release date will be in Q1 of 2004, its been screened to many, and the word is, its FANTASTIC. dior_addict
My cousin saw the Harvest Crusade trailer during the Harvest Crusade in California about 5 weeks ago. She said it was pretty life-like, and Mel Gibson was present there, explaining a little about the movie. I didn't atten it, so I'm checking out the trailer now. Thanks for the link. W/O going into a LONG and drawn out explanation as to why, most Christians do not consider Cathalocism as part of Christianity. Many tenents of the Catholic faith go directly against some central tenents of the the Bible. While the media tends to portay an "Christian" in a movie as a priest w/ a white colar, there are several key elements that differentiat the two. First off, Christian literally translates as "Of Christ" or "Like Christ" basically, a follower and believer of Christ's teachings. The Catholic Chruch strayed from that basic belifes and the tenents of Christ during the middle ages. In the early 1500's Martin Luther formed the Reform Church (Protestants) to try to get back to the basic teachings of Christ and away from the power struggle of the Catholic Church. Today, there are several key issues that seperate the two. While Its rediculous to pick at the minor things, there are some major issues that are worth noting. The Bible states Christ said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (Joohn 14:6). However, Catholics must confess their sins to a priest for absolution. Christians believe that Jesus paid the ultimate price with his sacrifice. By his death, we need only confess our sins to HIM and we are forgiven by his sacrifice. We also believe that while Mary was the carrier of Jesus by immaculant conception, she was just a woman. She was an amazing person from what the Bible says, but still jsut a human being. She later had children of her own by natural birth with her husband Joseph. Christians do not believe in praying to her as an intecessiary as noted above. The Vatican is a WHOLE issue that I doubt any man short of the Pope and his confidents truley understand. They are the single most powerful country in the world (yes they are an independant nation from Italy). Mel Gibson is part of a group of REformed Catholics that uphold the original tennents of the Catholic church prior to the reformation act in the mid 70's (I believe, mighta been late 60's). Anyways, I am not an expert on his faith (and would never persume to know another mans walk with God) but I believe while adhering to the basic beliefes of Catholicism, he does not subscribe to these newer changes in the religion. I do not mean to start a flame war or get off on a tangent, only to point out that Catholicism and Christianity are not the same thing. Hope that helps and not henders. Some interesting notes about "The Passion": 1) "The Passion" is mean to be a BIBLICAL retelling of the last 12 hours of Jesus Christ using information from the 4 Gospels. That is going to make some people mad because they do not belive in the word of God (the Bible). IF it is indeed true to the Gospels, it will more than likely tick off a number of people as there are many sects that call themselves Christians that do not preach by the word. 2) There are a NUMBER of issues with the Antidefimation Leagues claims or anti-semitism. As I noted above, while it might have been Jews that physically sentenced Jesus to death, it is the CENTRAL TENENT of Christianity that Christ died for ALL our sins. One of my favorite versus is Matthew 7: 1-5 "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. " " I think its a good reminder not to put anothers short commings ahead of our own. The message of Jesus was about love, for your brother and most importantly for your God. I have friends that are quite devoute atheists that even respect Jesus's works and his sleflessness. I think its important that that is not lost. 3) The second major issue with the ADL's claims is that they are basing their claims on a scripts that was illegally obtained (read stolen) from ICON Productions (Mels Prod COmpany). Albeit ironic that someone is claiming the moral high ground whil refrencing stolen material, the scripts have changed SIGNIFICANTLY since that leak according to ICON. There have been numerous screenings of "The Passion" with numbers of Jewish representatives and various church leaders in attendance with amazing reviews so far. 4) The movie is going to be VERY and I mean VERY violent. The crucifiction of Christ has been beautified and forgetten over the years. Its become an icon and not a reality for many people. The Bible is quite graphic in the pain and torment that Christ went through. This movie is meant to serve as a powerful reminder of the fact that this perfect man who was blameless and without sin took on ALL the pain of the world and died for us. That to me is such a powerful image that it still brings tears to my eyes everytime I think about it. 5) Finally its meant to serve as a reminder that Jesus triumphed over even the grave. After seeing all that Christ went through, hopefully it will be that much more powerful to think of what he conquered. I am hoping that this movie move people to no degree. I am sure it will offend, and make some peopel uncomfortable. I think we should all feel uncomfortable with how we take Jesus's sacrifice lightly at times. In that way, its a good thing. LIke I said, I don't knwo Mel personally to say those are his intentions, but I think thats what he's aiming for. Thats WAY more than 2 cents. SOrry if I took up too much space!!!! :-) /soapbox
knightracer
Mel Gibson did not attend the Harvest Crusade. They did however show an extended preview at the event.
morganpugh84
It was contreversial not because it was in Latin but because alot of Jews thought it was anti semantic(sp?), and were afraid alot of christians would see this and again blame Jews for Jesus' death.Pretty lame reason to be controversial though, since I don't see Germany getting all up in arms when we make a WW2 movie. I can see there point however I never let movies influence my opinion of something because they are never the full story. It has always been tarted up for Hollywood. semifamous
Personally, I'm going to be seeing this movie as soon as I can. I live in a small town, so it may not be playing here, but I'll drive to Laughlin, NV (1.5 - 2 hours) or something if it's there, or Phoenix (3 hours) to see it opening day. I heard it was going to be in Latin and Aramaic, but that even without subtitles, you'd be able to understand what's going on. From the two previews I've seen, it looks awesome.... =) It *will* most likely be rated R though, and that's going to hurt it. From the small clips I've seen of the gore and violence they show in the previews, if it's not rated R, I'll be surprised (but in a happy way.) :)

username
Catholics must confess their sins to a priest for absolution. Christians believe that Jesus paid the ultimate price with his sacrifice. Catholics do not HAVE to confess to a priest to have sins forgiven, they can be forgiven by asking for forgiveness. The priest is there for support and to help with any situation if you choose.
