RAR File Question

Question

Hello neowin users.

I was wondering if it is possible to extract a part within multi parts RAR files? like .part2.rar or .part3.rar without needing the first part (part1.rar)

is there any software able to do such things? it would be very useful for me if there is such a thing.

cheers :)

Winrar can do this.....just right-click the certain files you want to save and choose "Extract to specified folder"

Winrar states it is a 40 day trial but you can keep using it as long as you want, you'll just have an annoying popup every now and then asking you to buy it.

It depends. As long as the content of the file(s) are within part2 and part3, you can extract just those files. But if part of the file is in part1, then you can't extract it. Also, if it's a solid archive (all files compressed as a single block), then you can't extract anything.

As Marshall suggested, try WinRAR.

I guess it would be possible to change the file names so .part2 becomes .part1 and so on but it almost definitely would have issues if it even worked. It would be better to have the full set of archives before beginning to extract them in order to prevent any issues. Marshall recommended what I would call the best program for the job, in the form of WinRAR. It says that it is a forty-day trial but you can simply continue to use the software beyond those forty days because it does not disable itself. All you need to do is close a little nag window that appears when you open an archive with the software after the trial ends. There are other programs that offer similar functionality, though I have not used them. Download links below:

WinRAR (32-bit)

WinRAR (64-bit)

WinZip

7Zip

From what I remember, these are all free in a sense as they use the nag window trick instead of crippling the software and making it unusable. I can't guarantee that WinZip and 7Zip will work with RARs, but WinRAR allows you to both extract and create your own .RAR files, so it would be the best in the opinion of most people. Plus, it's extremely easy to use.

No, if the movie file is one big file it will need to be extracted using all .rar files, then you can go about editing your video.

I have in the past was able to play part of a movie from a rar file which is part of a series. Only because it wasn't compressed at all and the rar splits were just used as a container. (it makes sense because the movie was already compressed in the first place).

Why don't you just try it for yourself. Download only a few parts and try to play it.
