Why do US Americans die younger than Britons ?

Recommended Posts

It's skewed because most Republican leaning states have highest obesity rates.

1. Mississippi, 32.0 percent

2. Alabama, 30.3

3. Tennessee, 30.1

4. Louisiana, 29.8

5. West Virginia, 29.5

6. Arkansas, 28.7

7. South Carolina, 28.4

8. Georgia, 28.2

9. Oklahoma, 28.1

10. Texas, 28.1

Higher obesity leads to shorter lives. If you took these 10 states out it would be close to the same.

Nice troll...

Obesity and political party have absolutely no correlation whatsoever. So nice try.

Actually the Southern states tend to like deep fried food that they are known for. Also, it's hot down there, which causes people to not be outside and move around as much. And people down there aren't as wealthy as some other parts of the country, so people tend to go for the "cheap" food sources (dollar menus).

Above all this, since there is so much money in this country, there is a huge competition for jobs. And hence people have to work harder than other countries to land/keep a job to support their families. There was a study recently that said that US workers take much less vacation time as any other country in the world. All of this leads to a great deal of stress, which then leads to a shorter life span.

Reagan was saddled, and sandbagged, by Congress. He signed a budget deal with them to limit spending increases but Speaker Tip O'Neill (D) & Co. violated it before the ink was dry. The tax cuts raised tax revenues drastically, but when Congress spent 3x that gain in new programs....

And that has what to do with the topic? Oh that's right, nothing. Take your teabags somewhere else bro.

That last bit is definitely true. I am lucky to work for an international company based in the UK and Germany, so although I'm in the US now, most of the policies come from over there and the higher-ups are from all over the world, so it's better here than the average American company. There is less holiday/vacation time given here to begin with, and on top of that, some employers passively encourage their workers not to take their days off. I've heard of people being nudged out of a job for having the audacity to take the holidays they earned. It's messed up.

Your absolutely wrong. There is correlation between political parties and obesity. There is study that points this out. There is no excuse for obesity. Many countries have less food the US has. As for being hot that ridiculous excuse. Mexico is just as bad and they don't have this problem.

Do you understand the definition of correlation? Because that list is a textbook example of it.

You only have to watch current US TV shows to see that practically every advert shown is trying to sell takeaway junk food to the masses.

I was shocked to the core at the kind of crap that they try to force feed the American public every 5 minutes and it comes as no surprise having seen this that America is known as the land of the morbidly obese.

The government really should intervene and take some control and limit how much junk food is advertised for the sake of future generations.

It's no wonder so many people are starting to think the government plans this, or at least allows it to happen, for a reason. If people are sick, lazy, lethargic, and dependent on the government... well, you see where I'm going with it.

We have a corrupt and inefficient health care system, protected by religious extremists who believe you can pray away the gay out of of someone.

"pray away the gay" I Love It! LMAO :woot:

The fat slobs live longer, how often do you hear about a fat ass keeling over dead "for no reason"? No it's always some health nut keeling over at a young age, they skew our average down. That's why I'll be an old fat ass and not die young and "healthy"

When the fatasses keel over, nobody says it's for "no reason". So this isn't really a valid argument. No need to be a "health nut" either. Moderation, my friend. :)

Could also go with our laws as well. We are allowed to carry guns, so more deaths from guns than Europe. There is also the diet, mexico drug wars killing tons of people in texas and other bordering states, along with many other factors. But a few years is nothing really. What is the percent of "incorrectness" of this study? If it is a year or 2,then we could actually all be the same lol.

My uncle had a German exchange student live with him a couple weeks. He could not believe the amount and how often we ate!

If you goto walmart and see these fat people on a cart driving around, there is your answer why American's don't live wrong. To fat and lazy to do ANYTHING! The welfare system needs changed so a good amount of these fat people can't use foot stamps on junk food. That alone would probably help us out. The rest of us just need to get off our arses and workout or something.

I would also like to point out that my uncle also went to france and around that area for work. They get much more vacation than American's do. This could also help too. We work a lot, and maybe if we had more time off we would be able to do more? The last thing I want to do after a day of work is run or workout... just my opinion... and just a theory.

Good point as well. Most people get a week or 2 for vacation in US, while other countries seem to give more vacation time. less stress = better health.

There are just too many people here -- that's why.

The more people there are, the quality of life goes down.

And the incentive to live, decreases.

20% of the UK population live in just one city. Overall, the UK has a higher population density.

Sure, the U.S. may have a larger overall population but so much of it is spread around rural areas.

Besides, your own article already said that this was not the reason.

Huh?? The US, while having a relatively large population, actually has a very low population density compared to most other countries. Compare the US with the EU and you'll see that your comment doesn't make any sense at all.

We work too much.

Canadians work just as much as Americans though and we live longer. Most careers have 2 week vacations with pressure not to take them both at once.

While our corporations may not be any more generous than US corporations, our government does provide much longer maternity/paternity leaves (and they guarantee that your job will still be there).

Overall though, the U.S. healthcare system doesn't cover 100% of the population and I think you'll find out that this is the reason behind the life expectancy numbers.

Our healthcare system was ok, definetly could be improved (thats for another thread), but American's need to take care of their own health instead of relying on the government to do it. If you don't want to take care of yourself, then please die already is the way I see it.

Health has very little to do with the government...

Correlation =/ cause.

So what if obesity happens to be around Republican states? That doesn't mean they are related.

The other guy actually showed factors that could CAUSE obesity in those specific states. All you did was throw out one statistic and another statistic and tried to make a random relationship between them. He is absolutely right, and you haven't "proved" anything.

^^I had a friend who drives truck all day and ate these when they were available... He is still skinnier than I am. But he also works ALOT on his farm. The guy can eat whatever and however much he wants and still be healthy. Some people are able to do that... I'm not one of them.

Chad OchoCinco says eat what you want, and work out like your supposed to, you won't have a problem.

I don't follow. He was trying to argue that it's better to be "a fatass" than be healthy and die "of nothing". But there's a lot fewer healthy people dying early (and often those end up being related to undetected heart problems, sometimes there from birth, etc that would have likely affected them no matter what) than overweight/obese people dying early of more predictable causes. I was saying giving up on living a healthy lifestyle for a reason like that is not a very good position to take.

THANK YOU.

YES.

more self-reliance and less wanting the government to do everything for us, please.
