Freeware to use paper scanner over network

Question

I am looking to use a scanner hooked up to another computer on my network to scan images directly to my computer. I have found a piece of software called BlindScanner that works well, but it is just trial software. Can anybody recommend a good freeware program that can scan over my network? I checked the freeware list, but did not see anything that might work. Any help would be appreciated.

if none of these work I can give you away my vuescan registration. I will not use it anymore since I no longer scan 35mm negatives, so it will be all yours, no piracy here.

I'm at a bit of a loss to see any benefit in this. Surely you have to be at the scanner to change the documents/films etc that you are scanning.

There are self feeding scanners.

Yes, but you still have to go to the scanner to load up the documents/films. Just seems a bit daft when you can just set the PC that has the scanner attached to save to the other PC.

Nevertheless, the OP asked for help for a specific issue, doesnt matter what we think about it. Maybe someone else feeds the scanner remotely, maybe it's a special scanner, we dont know.

I can access/control my scanner on windows 7 without needing any other third party software.

Yeah maybe its a "magic" scanner that auto loads itself with the stuff you want to scan ;)

I also don't see much use for this in a home type setup, if work -- then buy the damn software you have been using I looked its not very expensive. At work normally their is a network scanner/copier -- you scan your doc and it puts in dir you can access, or it just emails to you as pdf/jpg/etc

In a home setup, even if connected to a computer you normally don't use - the PC would have to be turned on and running would it not, so can't you setup the buttons on the scanner to save to a dir and then just share this dir.. then go back to your PC and access the files that way?

What specific scanner are we talking about, make and model and we can see what its software can do, or if its directly connected to network sort of thing.. I looked and found remotescan, and remotetwain but have not seen any FREE software to do this.

But if we understand the actual scanner in use, and the reasons and method of use where want to use it remote - maybe we can offer alternative solution in either software or method of use, etc.

So you think scanning it's limited to just scan a whole document and thats it?

Have you evern used an industrial grade scanner?

There are many function that can be done remotely and be easier.

Well, were I work we have 4 or 5 of this type of scanner in the warehouse, doing nothing. We have moved on from this type of machine as they were just not adaptable enough.

We currently use an IBML Imagetrac 3, which is much more adaptable.

But you still have to be stood by it to feed in the documents.

Wow, I didn't think my simple question would set lead to such a large thread. I am not trying to access a "magic" scanner, or an industrial one. In fact, it is a scanner sitting in the same room with me. However, my printer/scanner has died, but my wife has one hooked up to her computer. I can print stuff off of her printer, but for some reason am unable to scan docs directly into my computer. I have been scanning stuff to her computer, then copying it over to mine(Win XP), but thought it would be nice if I could just skip the middle step. The software I found (BlindScanner) does exactly that, but costs $25 or $30, and I am simply looking for something that does the same thing for nothing. This is something I don't have to have, but would be nice for the few times a month that I need it. Thanks to the first poster who supplied some links to search, I will see if any of that works for me.

"Have you evern used an industrial grade scanner?"

Yeah you think a person that has that type of scanner would be looking for FREE software because they don't want to lay out $30 for the software they have been using

Ok so now we know how your using it, what about the actual make and model, my scanner I can push a button on and its saves it to a dir, so in your case just access the directory on the computer the scanner is actually connected to via a share.

Or here's another idea the few times a month you need to use it, why not just plug it into your machine? You stated they are in the same room.

they make soho mfc devices for this....If you are in the market for a laser, brother makes a nice b&w usually for 2-300. I know this isn't what the OP was looking for, but the right tool for the job....and there is no other software required (meaning free to use on as many computers as he would like...so in essence free software)
