bayrider
***UPDATE*** click HERE for latest renderings (Jan.21.04) Today the LMDC (Lower Manhattan Development Corp) and the PA (Port Authority) released the massing models for what will be built on the site of the fallen WTC designed by Daniel Libeskind and David Childs. As far as im concerned, imo, the new model isnt as striking of a landmark as the original WTC was but i still like it. The originals were 417m (1368ft). When they were built they were the tallest buildings in the world untill the Sears Tower was built in Chicago 2yrs later. What is being built now (next year) is a combination of an observation deck/tower/office which combined count for 1776ft/541m (2100ft/640m with antenna). When 1 & 2WTC (the twins) fell, it caused a chain reaction which destroyed 5 other buildings in the WTC complex which werent really tall ot begin with and significantly shorter than the twins. It seems as if they have opted to rebuild 1 really tall (worlds tallest) and 6 tall buildings instead of what was originally 2 super talls and 4 short buildings. here are the pictures... dont forget, the buildings wont look like the pictures, but give you a rough idea of the size and impact on the skyline. heres an animation of the original design which was chosen in Feb 2003 what what will most likely get built. Honestly i wasnt too happy with it because it was really short, and almost a disgrace considering it would barely make an impact on the skyline as the Twins did, which was more of a symbol of power & strength due to its shear volume rather than a really really really tall building. Heres a different angle, and probably most commonly viewed angle in pictures/movies/tv and this is how the old WTC's looked roughly at the same angle This is 7 World Trade Center which wasnt part of the complex since it was across the street, but was heavily damaged and construction has already begun (its 229m/750ft and the original was 174m/570ft) OLD 7WTC (174M/570ft) NEW 7WTC (229M/750ft) Edited January 23, 2004 by bayrider

bayrider
yea, im not that big of a fan, but if you had seen the other proposals you'd be glad this one got chosen... IMO this picture looks the best

Hawkeye
they suck.....I hope this is not true. This is no joke. This was the finalist out of all the designs and was the one selected as the winner, so this is indeed what will be built on the site where the World Trade Center used to stand. bayrider
i'd still like to see the other towers about 30-40meters taller to be as tall as the original twins, but that other tower is 540m so i guess its a comprimise, i still think something better could have been built btw, this isnt the final design, its just a massing model to give a rough idea of what will be built

Long
Pretty cool, although they should focus on just like 1 or 2, not 5.
Starman
why are all the roofs screwed up? ;p They're not screwed up, the buildings are, in a sense, bowing their heads. Personally, I'm not thrilled with the design. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. heres an animation of the original design which was chosen in Feb 2003 what what will most likely get built. Honestly i wasnt too happy with it because it was really short, and almost a disgrace considering it would barely make an impact on the skyline as the Twins did, which was more of a symbol of power & strength due to its shear volume rather than a really really really tall building. There was nothing like seeing those towers every day. They have to put something just as impressive there or it's going to be weak. Mike
SimplyPotatoes
what crappy pictures u think they could get someone to do a nice model of these instead of crap some 10yr old kid did in mspaint
Malechai Veteran Posted September 18, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 18, 2003 cool, i like them. I like the tilted roof because, like starman said, i get the impression that the buildings are bowing their heads. very cool
snippet1
I saw a docco on Dicovery Channel (power zone) about these. The big one is called the 'freedom tower'. Also, on Sept. 11 each year, at the times when the first and second planes struck, rays of light will shine through and illuminate the towers real cool (the first ray just shines on the freedom tower, and the second one shines on 2 wtc aswell). This is similar to the Shrine of Rememberance in Melbourne, where a plaque is illuminated at 11am on the 11th of Nov. As for the look, well, I think it's like Federation Square (also in Melbourne - http://www.federationsquare.com.au/) - EVERYONE hated it at first, but it has sorta started to grow on us. Typh0n
what crappy pictures u think they could get someone to do a nice model of these instead of crap some 10yr old kid did in mspaint Massing models are not lifelike renderings. Massing models are purely for showing how a building will fit into an area with other buildings, the terrain, etc. Massing models have very little detail and are generally a single color. Having been a 3D modeler for an architectural firm for many years, massing models are generally a tool used for the client and not used for public display, but given the situation, I can see why they allowed the public to see the massing models. As far as the design, it is no where near finished. A building will constantly change during its design cycle. This model was developed during whats called the schematic phase. There is still the design phase in which the building will receive most of its detail and the construction document phase where the actual working plans are developed off the design. I look forward to seeing some nice renderings and animations from the designers.
CatnipOligarchy
not bad.. i think it was important for them to build something taller to show that america wont give in to terrorism. . but whats up with the slanted roofs?
bayrider
just be glad we didnt get one of these proposals built.. which were all rejected by the public, i think at the time there was a fear of building tall
bayrider
(Sorry i have to post twice, the board wont let me post this many pics in one thread) so a second batch of propsals were released.. this one is just disgusting, its a skeleton of the old towers with observation decks or something at the exact same place where the planes struck this one was probably drawn by the designers 3yr old child or something this one is just a bunch of squigly lines, they withdrew cause their design was so bad there is also the propsal which i put in my first post which was the winner. But... this one is Fosters "kissing" towers, this was the best proposal IMO and what i wanted to get built at 538m/1765ft (approx 100m or 328ft taller than the original twins)
Starman
The problem is that in this area, we need SOMETHING. You figure that even the oldest people around here had the towers around for at least half their lives, and for them to be destroyed so senselessly really makes you want to kick these engineers and contracters in gear to just get something there. You can't even look at lower Manhattan anymore without getting disgusted. Having something to replace that section would at least bring some comfort back. Dessimat0r
They should make one that looks like the massive Starfleet building from Star Trek with the metal frame around it ;)
Malechai Veteran Posted September 18, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 18, 2003 You figure that even the oldest people around here had the towers around for at least half their lives i was watching a documentary and they started building them in the 60's and didnt finish until the 70's.. 1975 i think, i dont remember tho. wish i could remember more specifically than that. anyways, I remember thinking it took about 15 years to build. so 1975 until 2001 is 26 years. they didn't have a long life and its kind of weird to think that their lifespan was less than twice as long as it took to build them. crazy. WTC complex isnt just 2 buildings, its 7 buildings, a mall and a subway... the whole development took 15yrs, i'd say from the day it was drafted on paper, approved by the city untill the completion of the last building took 15yrs, id say it takes about 2yrs for each building to get built. btw, those who are asking about the slanted roofs, someone posted earlier that they add some kind of shadow or ray of light on the park/old footprints of the twins. Theyre also a cosmetic look much like how the Empire State building has that crown spire, its inhabitable but it adds a precense to the overall design, many buildings have spires.. heres a picture of a building going up in Australia's Gold Coast with a slanted roof.
