bayrider
its not just a building, there is also a memorial, a museum, parks, lots of open space, cultural center and a memorial for those who died. The footprints where the original Twins stood on are not being built on. this is JUST THE BUILDING. Only 1 WTC is taller than the twins. the rest are all shorter. even though lives were lost, which i do feel sorry for those who lost their loved ones, i wish the original twins didnt fall either, but the fact is, office space was lost and it needs to be replenished, NY cant go on forever with a huge gap in the heart of downtown Manhattan. i'd hate to see an open wound where hundreds of thousands of people interacted with eachother everyday. id rather see it prosper but at the same time show its respects for the dead and "1776 freedom tower" is just a name given to the tower by the press. im sure once the WTC complex is built they will be called 1-7 WTC
bayrider
here is the latest modfiied renderings of the new twisting WTC. Yes, the buildings outer frame twists as it rises.. The tallest building rises to 1776 ft (2000ft to the top of the antenna) and will be the tallest building in the world (taller than the CN Tower even). there may be some modifications and retouches but i am sure it will look somewhat like the renderings posted below. IMO i think we could have had something nicer.
snippet1
Weird - twisting. It's looking better now, but it really looks like it belongs somewhere in Asia... BTW, way to resurrect a thread! ;)

Hehe, how typical of USA :) Always trying to beat the competition, even if it's to honor the lost lives.

It's human nature, USA or not, to be competitive, and honoring lost lives is the perfect excuse!
bayrider
there is a memorial next to the base of the tallest building. As well.. the footprints of the original twins are not being built on and are being devoted to part of the memorial. Considering 10million sq feet of office space was lost, and being in NY free space doesnt come easy so something has to be built with what is available. Mantra Locust
http://wtc2002.com I think that this was the best proposal by far. I agree, I remember seeing this, and really liked it :)

MxxCon
http://graphics7.nytimes.com/images/2003/1...tower.3.650.jpg doesn't you think that building is positioned too much north from that shot? and don't you think it looks too white? bayrider
no not really... WTC is actually on the western side of lower manhattan and that picture is taken from the eastern side from Brooklyn so its gives a diff perspective. The color doesnt have anything to do with the buidings final design and what materials and colors will be used. it gives us an IDEA of what its going to look like. its roughly from this angle.. and the new http://graphics7.nytimes.com/images/2003/1...tower.3.650.jpg
+chorpeac MVC Posted December 19, 2003 MVC Share Posted December 19, 2003 I like the looks of them. I'm not a NY'er so I am sure the skyline is an important feature of the new buildings for your guys. But I like the looks of the new buildings. matt74441
Seriously, the thing looks like its completely made out of glass. How much safer is that?
giga Veteran Posted December 19, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 19, 2003 who knows.. it certainly does look like an Asian building...modern...etc..
eth3l
I hate the jagged lines in the design. That is really trendy right now in architecture, but in 20 years will look dated, loke all the building built in the 70s. they should keep the lines clean and simple. I agree there were some butt ass ugle designs though
bayrider
if it is glass...what difference does it make? what does that have to do with safety?
matt74441
No idea, but doesn't having a bit of steel on it make it a bit stronger?
bayrider
the glass is just the outside, its only cosmetic.. everything else is steel and re enforced concrete. Its like a car.. the frame is still steel and so are the beams and columns but the body may be carbon fiber or plastic or metal...

bayrider
a pretty big update... not that many care but i think 9/11 was a big part of most of our lives and the rebuilding process should get more attention than it is. you can see part of the trade center complex here which includes 6 office buildings... the main one you see is supposed to be the world's tallest building. At the base you can see the memorial grounds which is the waterfalls and the park etc. click image for 1500dpi image this is the inside of the memorial which is a waterfall on the footprints of the Twin Towers click for 1500dpi image Edited January 23, 2004 by bayrider
