720p MKV files on an Acer Revo

Question

Hi guys,

I have an Acer Revo 3610 and try to run all different MKV files (etc!) using it.

I use Media Player Classic Home Cinema and find I very often have to go Options -> Output and select different ones (EVR, Haali, Uncompressed) to get it working smoothly but depending on what MKV it is, I always need to try 5 or 6 different settings before it runs smoothly with no stuttering or audio lag.

I'd suggest maybe the Revo simply isn't up to it, but every video will run smoothly with the right setting. I was wondering if there's a good MKV plugin that'll run nicely with slower processors? One I can install and not have to worry about it again?

Thanks!

http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/DXVASupport.html

I'm not familiar with that machine but I'm guessing the CPU can't handle the software decoding alone. Best bet is to use DXVA if it has a decent GPU.

Reason why it seems to run better on certain output renders is because different OS's requires a specific renderer to activate hardware acceleration. You're basically turning it on and off by switching between random ones.

I have a number of Revo 3610 and 3700's around the house and the first thing I done with all of them was updated all of the BIOS, then formatted them and installed a clean copy of Windows 7 x64 with no acer bloat. I installed the latest drivers from the acer website and then let a number of them such as the ION drivers update through Windows Update.

To play all media I use XBMC.org and have no problem playing any 720p or 1080p video format with this software over the network or from the local hard drive without any problems at all.

Thank you all so much for the replies - not sure the Revo has a decent GPU (understatement) but will give DXVA a try and see how I get on, thank you!

And good advice on clearing everything and updating the BIOS, but unfortunately I'm quite new to things like BIOS updates and would be scared I got it wrong! Also I only have the copy of Windows 7 that came with my Revo :( (and a retail version for my desktop, but I guess that wouldn't work with the Revo's CD key?)

I'm also not a huge fan of XBMC unfortunately... I have it, and love the layout for browsing through videos, but when it comes to actually playing them I almost always quit out of XBMC and load them regularly, just because I don't have an adapter that lets my Logitech Harmony communicate with my Revo, and using a mouse with XBMC is quite tricky.

I also tried DiAVC which looks great (so a free alternative to CoreAVC?) but unfortunately when I pressed the register button nothing happened, I then went to the DiAVC site to try register it there, but there was only an option which required you to pay. Maybe I should bite the bullet though and just pay up...

Thanks again
