ADSL Problem

Recommended Posts

For about that last 3 months, my ADSL connection has been disconnecting :( What happens is, the ADSL "Act" light on my modem will blink non-stop for about a minute or so then it disconnects causing the both the ADSL "Link" and "Act" lights to go out on my modem. I have tried everything to fix the problem, I've changed phone cables, phone jacks and everything and still the same problem. I talked to this guy at the computer store today and he said it could possibly be spyware thats causing it to disconnect. I phoned the technical support service of my ISP and they said they would send someone to look at my modem but its been three months and no one has came. I've run out of ideas about how to fix it. Any one have any ideas or suggestions?

Try installing Spybot: Search and Destroy. If you have adaware, it will find it. Just make sure you update the database. You will also want to get a good antivirus (Norton, McAffee) and also update the dat files, and run a full system scan.

Next time, post your problem in the right forum (Internet, Networking and Security) It will get a lot more responses

I doubt this has anything to do with spyware. Software doesn't normally cause your modem to disconnect. This is probably a hardware error, so you should just keep bugging your ISP and have them look at your modem.

I used to have DSL and Uggghhh it was tons better then Dial up. I use cable now and couldnt be happier :) I am thinking about going back to DSL becouse its like 12$ cheaper a month. Just to let you know yes DSL is a pain in the ass they are slow to set it up and when they do set it up its prone to having problems. Hmmmm tell your telephone company to run a local run test. Hmmm I hear using a hair dryer on your phone jack for a few minutes can sometimes clear up the problem (something about moisture or static I dont know). If all else fails tell them you want a different DSL modem or buy one at the store the ones they give out now are crap.... ( I used to work at AOL in the Highspeed department helping people )

I work in technical support for an ADSL ISP (zen internet)

It sounds to me like your modem is losing sync with your DSLAM on the exchange.

What modem do you have ?

What other telephony do you have on the line ? sky digital box ? fax machine ? answerphone ? telephone(s)?, on digita?, analogue modem ? etc.

Which of these devices use microfilters ? exactly how is it all set up , starting from the master socket ?

Does the problem still happen if you unplug all telephony off the line and have just 1 filter and your modem plugged straight into the master socket?

Hope i can help.

;)

I had a similar prob with the Cisco ADSL router that I have.

I had to roconfigure the router and it went away.

First, call tech support and have then check the connection from their end.

If they find nothing then have them help you reconfigure the router.

They should be able to walk you through it.

Write down the instructions in case you need to do it again.

Then again, like Inertia said, it could be a prob at the DSLAM or the

line provisioning may have been changed for some reason at there switch office.

Like i said i've tired everything i can think of to fix this, it's driving me nuts cause i cant do anything online when its acting up :( . But yeahy thanks everyone for the advice :D , im going to keep phoning my ISP until they do something about it, or i'll switch my ISP. I'll try getting a new modem from them, if they wont give me one i'll buy a new one, what's the best ADSL modem to buy?

swithching your ISP will most likley not fix the problem, but it may get you better support, and better communications with BT (your ISP have to do this for you) so it could be the answer in the end if they fail to solve the issue.

Who are you with Nemesis ?

I had the same problem I think with my usb adsl modem. you are saying that it disconnects and the modem is flashing a light (or not, depends on modem :p) which means it can't find an ADSL line ? Is that right?

If you're using xp then you definately have to upgrade drivers, solved my problem and many other persons problems.

I have the same problem, it diconnects me then I get the message "No Dial Tone" also there is loads of interferance on the phone line when the ADSL connection is active, the connection just drops when ever it wants, but it happens more frequent when the phone line is in use.

I am using the green ADSL modem that Freeserve Supply, im at work at the moment and cant think of its name!

Ive attacched a scrible of my setup from the master socket.

your sky digibox is a telephony device that uses the 2-20khz range, It needs to be connected on the telephone side of the filter, in line with your phone, the filter needs to go straight into your socket.

BTW I think your modem is an alcatel speedtouch (maybe 330 , or 310, depending on its age)

yes it an alcatel speedtouch usb, try an anti virus , my connection was dropping because i had a virus, check your bandwidth usage, could be sucking up the bandwidth then d/c

its not a virus, its interferance from his digibox modem.

He has his filter set up wrong.

don't connect your adsl modem into the filter. plug it directly into the phone line

that wouldnt work at all, the whole point of the filter is to split the channels

Microfilters dont actually "split". They just put a filter on the phone line so you dont hear the modem. Inside, the connection to the modem is direct, only the phone one is filtered. Open one up, and take a look......

ah, u learn something every day. so u dont actually need a filter?

not if you dotn have any telephony devices onthe line.

But as you do, you need the filter to stop your analogue devices interfering with your ADSL frequancies.

Well, Ive managed to change the way everything is connected into the main phone line, and i have to say fingers cross'd I aint been diconnected yet! so thanks for the advice everyone :D

Geez, that must be some crappy tech support if they didn't ask you to check if your filters were setup properly. What did they do, ask for your userid and make you install drivers and send you on your way? Proper procedure would start with drivers then filters and then they would to a line test and finally see what your modem is sync'ing at.

Argonaut is right, you plug the DSL directly into the phone line. Putting them both through the filter effectively removes the filter's purpose.

Some DSL modems like mine (Westell) have a special setting for keeping the connection in either 'ALWAYS ON' or 'ON DEMAND' your ISP might have (on purpose) switched the default settings to 'ON DEMAND' my connection once started having the same issue and after checking the settings I found that that BellSouth my ISP had changed the default on my modem from ALWAYS ON to ON DEMAND this was done after a firmware upgrade I did to the modem.

So check on this, it might be related to the problem you are having.

Hope this helps.
