I want to like FooBar

Question

I currently use iTunes but I don't have any iDevices any more and I know how modular and customizable foobar is.

Thing is, I'm not sure it would be worth jumping over to foobar from iTunes. I'm not bothered about saving resources or anything like that, it's new features that I'd like.

What extensions are you using that would stop you from moving from foobar to another app?

The one thing I would want to keep from iTunes would be the library format, and hopefully all of my meta data interpreted in the same way as iTunes would. Anything on top of that is a perk!

Well the certain upside of foobar2000 is that you can maintain your library in a fashion similar to anything you can imagine, as opposed to other apps that usually impose their way of doing stuff. It will just take less or more tweaking.

Ok, in that case, is there a way to make foobar display my library based on it's meta data?

Split it in to 3 views - artist/album/song?

Can't see a way to do that at the moment, just playlists and a song list

I use Foobar all the time and love it. I found that Foobar adapted very well to the layout of my media library without messing with it. I use iTunes for iPhone syncing, so I have all of my "active" music loaded in the iTunes Library in my Music folder. I also have my archived music in the Music folder for stuff I don't want syncd to my iPhone. Point Foobar to my Music folder, done.

As far as customization goes, from what I have seen the sky seems to be the limit as far as what kind of layout you want with Foobar. I found the defaults to be more than adequate for my needs. The default isn't anything like iTunes, but I still like it and find it easy to work in. Easy to make playlists and find particular songs I want to play.

I wonder when Cooky is showing up, he's late for a foobar-themed thread... blink.giftongue.gif

PS: Thread title sounds like a sad love drama... :D

Seems like it! whistle.giflaugh.gif

That's what I want but maybe without turning foobar into iTunes ;P

So I've added my entire music library but my "all music" section only lists the default music which comes with windows. My music is actually in a different location.

How do I get those iTunes style columns without installing that theme?

Yes, you can use the Facets plugin for viewing your Media Library. It works just like you want above. This is the beauty of Foobar. If you use a different UI like ColumnsUI, you can make it look pretty cool as well.

Yes, the facets plugin is great, now my only problem is that the music I added appears to be a playlist. How do I add music and make foobar think it's part of the library?

I have ctrl + f set to bring up my library search. I think of what artist or record label I want to listen to, and search for it. The beauty of the search is that results are instantaneous as you input the search. It also includes tags, and doesn't need to be resynced with the client whenever I add new music.

Foobar, minus all the addons, I still find to be much better than any other media player I've tried. Because even without third party extensions, you can do so much as far as getting it to work exactly the way you want.
