Best player / codec for MKV video

Question

What would be the best combination of player and codec for the best quality possible for MKV files

not sure i asked in the right place but would like a more clear answer

It seems that on most other websites there are pols and topic about how efective the said codec is at reducing load ( as to be used in a cheap . old HTPC ) when playing 1080P files , whilst i dont care for that .. i have a powerfull enough PC to play 1080P just from the CPU with ease .. what i would like to know is .. wich one is the best purely from the image quality perspective

examples :

Media player classic with ffdshow

media player classic home cinema edition with DXVA ( wich would be hardware decoding )

VLC player ( using its own codecs - also has an option to use hardware decode - not sure if its DXVA or some proprietary thing , not even sure exactly what DXVA is :D, apart from it using the GFX in order to decode the stream )

any other player -- CoreAVC codec ( havent used this one in a while now , not sure exactly how good it got but when i tried it last year ... it seemd to have less HQ than ffdshow for example )

got a ATI 6970 ( if it makes any diference )

Lav Splitter (MKV Splitter) + Media Player Classic Home Cinema + MadVR

That will get you playback on par with high end Oppo players.

LavSplitter will do MKV split and audio playback/pass through, MPC-HC will do playback, MadVR is high end GPU video renderer/scaler.

If you are serious and want to go at lengths for ruling out anything interfering with PQ, there are some things you need to take care of :

Regarding your display:

Fiddle through its menu's and disable anything that has to do with automatic contrast, color tones and the likes.

For the ATI drivers which I presume you have installed :

Make sure that in the Digital Panels group you have LCD Overdrive and any color corrections DISABLED

In Video - Video Settings DISABLE things such as :

Dynamic Contrast

De-noise

Edge Enhancement

Automatic Deinterlacing (mpc's renderer does a fine job)

Color Vibrance

Skin Tone Correction

Video Color

In terms of players, mpc-hc + madVR is more than enough (make sure you point mpc to madvr after you install it). Also in renderer settings chose your preferred output range (0-255; 16-235 ; the former looks best to me)

1. In terms of quality try to avoid VLC, especially when we are talking about MKV.

2. You should try KMplayer, PotPlayer, AV Splitter, madVR , LAV Filters, Splash Lite/ Pro and BS.Player Free - latest beta.

3. And check this out.

i have heard of madVR , but seemd abit to tricky to setup :p , and yes , i got all the "awesome marketing features" on OFF from the LCD options , also all settings regarding video in the ATI CCC had also OFF, only thing that remained was the codec (or what ever its called since its just something that links the graphic card with the player )

thanks for the answers , will try and report if i see a diference :p

read that last link ( wich is awesome btw Coperinc ) so am i to understand that nvidia is better at decoding ? ( CUDA vs. DXVA ? )

after alot of testing and settings , MPC+ffdshow+madVR seems to be the best choice IQ wise, tho i seem to have a small problem with audio loosing sync after a few stops and starts of the video / movie .. etc .

I use VLC Portable player just because I don't gotta install all crap. I stream stuff from the server so just drag it into the player and play away! I also have a WDTV Live Plus as well so i'll play them on the TV with that and they look just great too.

If you want a player that works with hardware acceleration out of the box then try Splayer. It also auto downloads subtitles which is a pretty sweet feature :) Oh and don't let the chinese website put you off, its fully english and is legit.
