97 viruses received in one e-mail check - Aaargh!

Recommended Posts

Normally I may receive a couple of viruses in my junk mail of 20-30 messages when I check them at 1:00 after getting home from work, but tonight I received 97 of the little buggers! They all are disguised as Microsoft Security Patches. I'm sure you know them well.

Now that wouldn't be so bad, but trying to delete some of the attachments causes Explorer to hang! The only way I can get rid of them is to open a command prompt.

Is it possible to create a file that cannot be deleted through normal means (not "read-only")? If so, these virus writes are sure getting crafty, aren't they?

BTW, I use PocoMail 3, so viruses don't affect my system.

I'm fairly lucky with the amount I get. Today muct have been about a record for me, though - 8 viri! All disguised as Microsoft patches (the emails are really getting believable - next thing they'll be using actual MS websets *touch wood*).

They came in 3 different flavours of virus, but Norton AV (I use it for this very reason) picked them all up in the emails.

I have an email address from about 4 years ago. I haven't used it in about 3. I checked it the other day and it had 14893 emails totalling 128mb with 4859 Viruses. Beat that :p

I have had my current email address for about 6 months and I still get no spam or viri :)

Get a new address and then be very careful where you use it. I have subdomain available so my primary address is

username@emailservice.co.uk

but I can also have somethingelse@username.emailservice.co.uk

I dont have to set any extra accounts up i can put anything before the @ sign and it will justgo to my primary address. The good thing is that I can have filters on what account things are sent to (makes life easier) also when I sign up for accounts I use that company name as the address, eg when i signed up for neowin i used neowin@username.emailservice.co.uk. This is great because as they are the only people to have that address if I start getting spam from them then they must have sold my address! Also you will find that most places have an autofilter on email addresses containing there name so they do not sell there own addresses on.

Also I NEVER use my address on any forums. When I am on usenet I just use me@privacy.net (this is an address that the owner has allowed anyone to use, check it out at privacy.net), and I just put a link to my website in my signature. On my website is a graphic which has been edited a little so that spam bots cant OCR it (the bot programs these days are amazing, but that isnt a good thing!). Check it out at www.mpugh.com

When signing up for junk things I use a seperate address with Yahoo or alike. I have about 40 accounst with yahoo, etc.

At the end of the day you just need to be careful. Do not put a working link to your email address anywhere. if you want to put your address on your site then make sure it is an image that is readable by a person but not by software. Just warp the text a little and put a confusing texture behind the text. Try to keep all of the colors similar so that when it is made black and white it it becomes impossible to read your address.

Ohhh...That sounds unrealistic or my area does not get much internet connection. I have not heard people in my area saying that they had that much virues at one time. I did had two viruses at one time in my main inbox.

I haven't gotten any yet, I feel so unloved

I only get about 1 spam message a month in my Hotmail address

Over the years, I've probably gotten about 10 email viruses in my inbox, wonder why I always get so few  Ah well, thats a good thing!

i've quickly scanned my junk mail recently, and i've seen this thing come up about 6 times in the past few days. not as much as some of you, but i'm getting it.

btw, hotmail already detects it, so anyone with a hotmail account is safe :p
