Backup Software for Windows

Question

I recently started work which involves development on a computer for the most part. I need a nice backup software that works sort of like the Apple Backup software which I use on my personal Macbook. Development is done in Windows XP. Can anyone please suggest me a free backup software?

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with Apple Backup. What does it do that you're looking for in backup software?

Windows XP Pro comes with a backup program built-in, you know. If you use XP home, install "ntbackup.msi" here: http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

Use your preferred engine and search for "ntbackup.msi" to learn more.

Yet another built-in Windows feature that eliminates the need for extra gunk on my machine.

I'm now using the built-in windows backup software.

I've attached an external HDD to it for the backup. What my question now is: Can I remove the HDD and transfer files manually to it and also use it as the backup drive of the computer? Or should I make an exclusive partition on the external HDD for backups and another partition for files to transfer between my colleagues?

Thanks!

what? Remove the HDD? What from the external enclosure?

If you attach an external drive you can manually copy files to as a back yes - not sure why you would even ask such a question? Nor do I understand why you think you need to partition this external drive? Just create a folder for your backups if you want to keep them separate from the files you use for exchange with other users.

I think your putting way to much effort into something that is quite simple. Just copy the files you want to backup to your external drive, or write a simple script to do it for you. Shoot most external drives come with backup software that can either backup specific folders or even take an image of the machine its connected to to provided for a bare metal restore of the machine.

I can vouch for Genie Timeline, as lars77 said. It has an auto sync so it only updates when the files are different/have changes. Or if you want something more exotic, I reviewed Handy Backup last time which can backup online, your Outlook, and even your database
