MS Word Question - Numbering and Sections

Question

Calling all people that are a bit handy in MS word. I have failed in trying to achieve the following and would appreciate any help in solving my little and probably simple problem.

I would like to have an auto updating number on the front page of a document that shows the total number of pages that are (only) in the last section.

The document has multiple sections throughout - upwards of 15. I have tried using style refs and fields but to no avail. Not that I'm saying these methods arn't the ones to use, just that my attempts didn't work out!

If any more info is required I will be lurking about.

Cheers,

rancid

A bit wonky, but you can do it with cross references. Add the number of pages in the section using Fields > SectionPages. Then give it either a header style, or a numbered step. Then go onto the page where you want this to show up, and do Insert > Reference > Cross Reference and find that heading/numbered SectionPages.

You'll have to do Update Fields to get them to all jive. This worked in MS Word 03.

Thank you for the reply :)

Will give this another bash. I tried fiddling about with this method but it I was referencing the page number which is in the header of the last page.

Can't remember the specific reason why I wasn't ok with it, have tried so many different ways it has gotten hard to remember what did what!

It may have been a formatting thing, or updating thing (I know word has issues updating things in headers/footers), or just flat out didn't work.

Will get back to you with results tomorrow.
