BroChaos Veteran Posted September 20, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 20, 2003 ok, i havee a linksys wrt54g. i have a laptop connected wirelessly. internet and everything works fine. however, when i go to transfer large files (1gb+) from the main computer (which is connected to the wrt54g with cat5 cable) to the laptop everything will just stop after it gets about half way or so. then i can't ping anything, connect to anything, nothing works at all. i then unplug the router, and plug it back in, and everything works great again. what in the heck is going on? mAcOdIn Veteran Posted September 20, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 20, 2003 Have you updated to the newest firmware yet? What kind of encryption are you running? I found that WPA worked better than WEP for wireless. NM just reread your post and noticed you're wired. I should sleep lol. That's odd because I have that router and wired works great for me. BroChaos Veteran Posted September 20, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted September 20, 2003 well the computer thats sending the file is wired to the router, the laptop thats receiving the file is wireless. i'm not running any encription, just mac filtering. also, i have updated the latest firmware on the router. well i'm trying again, so far im at 630mb of 1.71 gb, and it's still alive. i'm ****ed cuz i thought the schools network was down all evening, when it really was just my router.... mAcOdIn Veteran Posted September 20, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 20, 2003 So when the connection dies is it just the wireless part that dies or both wireless and land line that gives?
BroChaos Veteran Posted September 20, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted September 20, 2003 both die. everything dies. i can't ping computer from any computer. no internet. nothing. and as soon as i power the router off and back on, everythings fine again...weird eh? I would return that if I could. I could see wifi dropping out due to, interference, key switching on encryption, or just plain weird no signal for a second act of God type thing, but both should never die. And the wrt54g has no firewall so it can't be it misinterpreting anything as an attack and blocking access to youre gateway(my smc would do that till I eased up the rules). Only thing that I can think of is eaither it's overheating or it's faulty.

morganpugh84
do you have authentication enabled on the device? check in your wifi connection settings. if you do have it enabled, disable it. there is a known bug in Windows with wireless devices that try to use authentication but dont have any!! BroChaos Veteran Posted September 21, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted September 21, 2003 there is a problem with this router overheating during long/fast loads and linksys is in denail to admit it seriously? i was thinking of that last night, and when i felt it, it was pretty warm, but i shrugged it off because i didn't think heat could affect a router... i'm using mixed mode (b+g). and no authentication, just mac filtering. if you are right dude, i'm gonna be hella ****ed. morganpugh84
I have transfered huge files (upto 4GB) via the router at 100Mbit (over LAN) adnd over my 1Mbit internet connection and never had a problem. Yes the router gets warm but that is because it has been on for like 4 months :p
BroChaos Veteran Posted September 21, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted September 21, 2003 you have the exact same router? the wrt54g? i wonder how much difference it makes if mine is transferring by wifi, and yours is by lan.
