Great Games No One Played

Recommended Posts

It's a fact of life. All good games do not fly off store shelves. Whether the ads suck or the subject matter fails to appeal to the masses, plenty of great games bomb. If you're smart, you'll pick up these games. You might even find them for cheap.

'ICO' (PS2)

This subtle game was a huge hit with critics but sold like lawnmowers in New Mexico. You play as a young boy who comes of age and is left for dead by his society in an empty castle. Don't ask how he was born in the first place. He soon comes across a young girl inside the castle, and the pair must work together to escape their prison. The way the puzzles work around this idea makes "ICO" a thinking man's game. You'll often have to do one thing with the boy while the girl is doing something completely different. It's a refreshing change from most other games, and the art style is just as unique.

Panzer Dragoon Orta' (Xbox)

Sega's "Panzer Dragoon Orta for the Xbox is the latest installment in the series and centers on a young girl named Orta. She's rescued from a life of imprisonment by a dragon. Featuring old-school shooting aesthetics and some of the most gorgeous graphics to ever grace a videogame, it's a shame it didn't sell. "Panzer Dragoon" for the Saturn is included in its entirety, along with a host of other unlockable goodies. If you long for the lost days of shoot-'em-ups, this one's for you. Sega's loss is your gain when you find this one in the bargain bin.

'Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem' (GCN)

It's rare in this day and age that a game includes something truly revolutionary. But the sanity system in "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" for the GameCube is like nothing before it. The game will play tricks on you. As your character's sanity meter dwindles at the sight of horrific acts, the game world will turn upside down or the walls will start bleeding. Just be sure not to toss your GameCube out the window when the game tells you your memory card has been wiped. "Eternal Darkness" also has one of the most engrossing and legitimately mature stories out there. The graphics aren't too shabby, either. Buy it cheap and play it in the dark

I'd like to add Outcast to that list. It wasn't underrated (from the reviews I've seen), but not many people discovered it... a great game that came from nowhere with wonderful atmosphere and soundtrack. Unfortunately, it didn't sell very well so the sequel got canned :(

Anyone ever play Robotron64? There was also a PC version called Robotron X. It was an overhead 2D type game where you just run around and shoot things basically. The music was good though.

Loonyland:Halloween Hill and Dr.Lunatic.

Stupendously silly but awesomely contrived PC platformish, cartoony games with many references to classics like Hexen,Zelda etc.

In a class of their own.

Demo's at Hamumu.com

Sin by Ritual Entertainment. Released a couple weeks before Half-Life. Activision in their ohh soo infinite wisdom decided to make Ritual push it out the door before it was ready so that it's hit shelves before Half-Life by a couple weeks. There were bugs soo bad in it there was even a level you couldn't pass, among other crappy bugs. Obviously this cause a lot of bad reviews and many people on the Activision support bord even said they were returning it to exchange for Half-Life.

After they fixed the damn thing, I liked it better then Half-Life.

Since when has Zelda been a great game that nobody played? Almost every gamer(and even lots of non-gamers) know about the Zelda series. It is one of the most popular action/RPG series in existence(it is one of the most popular series period). With good reason too because Zelda games kick @$$.

Link is a one of Nintendo's huge franchise characters.

Read that again, slowly - the games in question Halloween Hill and Dr.Lunatic were the non-played games which made REFERENCES to the classics Hexen and Zelda.

i.e. bits of the games reminded Booyah of Hexen and Zelda.

LoL, my bad. I didn't even read the whole post. I just skimmed over it and I saw Zelda in the post. I was going to say, Zelda was never an ignored game. ;P

games that from my feeling were not played by too many people

  • Battlezone 2 + forgotten enemies mod - now thats how every strategy game should be
  • Earth 2150/Moon Project - i simply love to put my own tanks together and send them to war - LC rulez :)
  • Star Trek Armada 2 - without mod the game is just bah...try our mod - Fleet Operations ;)
  • Homeworld 1 - i think to less people played it because they don't liked the way to send fighters/spaceships around
