DocM
The problem with Proton's Briz-M second stage has been tracked down to a programmer who wrote bad code. Corrections shouldn't take long. This doesn't fix the Soyuz 2nd stage issue which is still under extensive investigation. Russian ISS flights are still delayed, but SpaceX's Dragon is still set to fly in late November. Rumors are that Roscosmos will reward the Briz-M programmer with a VIP seat directly under the next Proton to fly ;)

Geoffrey B. Veteran Posted August 30, 2011 Veteran Share Posted August 30, 2011 you would think with something like this that you would test the software prior to actual use?
DocM
One would think a full mission length test firing of the stage on a stand would be done after any running changes, but apparently not enough. Tests cost money & the Russian program has had funding problems.
neoadorable
thanks for the post Doc and glad they found the problem. i figured the issue would get corrected quickly, there's so much pressure right now to get the space program going again. i don't want to be too harsh on the guy, though, mistakes happen. three months of latrine duty on the ISS?
