+Majesticmerc MVC Posted September 3, 2011 MVC Share Posted September 3, 2011 *sigh* When will people start to respect others? I am finding this more and more that people enjoy making fun of religious beliefs, but I never seem to understand why? All it makes me think is that person isn't a very nice person (un-educated, not wise, someone who won't be in a respected position in life). For me in life, I want to be respected and seen to be helpful, nice and good things. Although I also realised that people who say "religion creates war" are wrong. It's people's greed and lust for power that creates war, not the actual religion itself. You should learn now that religion simply isn't an area for comedy. Of course it is, the problem is that religious people seem to have an inherent problem of being unable to laugh at themselves, or at least a vocal proportion of them can't. I'm a complete geek, and I have no problem at all with people taking the **** out of me for enjoying computer games, or programming in my spare time. I just laugh it off, because, when I think about it, it's not necessarily funny to me, but I can see how it would be funny to them. I respect religious people, some more than others, but I don't respect them for their religious beliefs, I respect them for what they do, and who they are. People need to learn that religion isn't the sole defining trait for a person, much in the same way that I don't define myself by the books I read. If people stop being so up tight about their beliefs, and learn to be able to laugh at themselves, they might accidentally have some fun too. Such a civil comment about religion. These are rare around Neowin. This site does love to make fun of religion. Thank you for your mature perspective! Rare around the rest of the planet as well, often for good reason. When it comes to comedy nothing is off limits. And that is a good thing. Damn straight.. This isn't making fun of religion, it's making fun of the morons who think they see religious symbols in stains and burnt toast. This. There's a difference between poking fun of a religion and actively attacking it.. In the same way you might tease your Jewish mate for being an accountant, or a black friend when he gets stopped in airport security :\ Context is everything, and in this case I think it's reasonable to give him the benefit of the doubt. grayscale
This isn't making fun of religion, it's making fun of the morons who think they see religious symbols in stains and burnt toast. ^This. I don' t think that believing and worshiping anything that resembles Jesus Christ is part of the Roman Catholic Church's teachings, so I don't find this offensive at all. Hmm, see this is where you're not quite correct (perhaps one of the un-educated people I referred to earlier :p Then again, perhaps not). Many religions DO support you to define yourself around that religion, that your life should revolve around it, you should live and breathe the religion. For me, it's not too much about the actual religion side, more the relationship side. Making fun of geeks is completely different to a religion as being a geek isn't a personal life choice in the same league as a religion is. I do laugh at other people from the religion I follow. However displaying a picture like that, like the thread about the wee in the holy water thing, is simply dis-respectful, and leads me to the conclusion that the person posting it does have disrespectful traits about them. More posts by the OP would confirm or dis-prove that they are worth my time in reading or not. Not really going to respond to this any more as I really it should be in the Religion thread. Just going to say what I, myself believe. Either you make fun of anything. or nothing. Because there will in 99% of the cases be someone, SOMEWHERE in the world taking offence. If we're going to stay away from one thing in comedy (this example, religion) we have to stay away from everything else aswell. You have to have some humor, and self distance, and just realize. HEY its a joke, just a goddamn joke, don't take it too seriously.
Zain Adeel
I believe in Jesus. But even i dont believe in such shapes formed out of food or on walls or clouds. And i always discourage people who forward emails of collection of pictures where the picture of Jesus is depicted or other religious figures or names on non offensive places. I discourage because those can also form on offensive stuff. Just like this post. So its their fault who believe in such pictures as miracles and now when one picture places that miracle on a place that is offensive to them they get angry. Why not? Being told I'm probably not very wise, and that I'm unlikely to be in a respected position in life, kind of niggles at me. You still deem yourself free to say such things. Well I deem myself free to view Jesus-Anus hybrids via my favourite tech site, so there.

Hardcore Til I Die
You should learn now that religion simply isn't an area for comedy. Epic fail on your part. Jokes about age, race, sex, hair colour, jobs, political beliefs, sexuality can all offend certain people. Why is religion any more out of bounds than any of those topics? You talk rubbish my friend.
