IndianPimp99
I've got a Linksys router that I used to share my cable modem connection for 2 years. I recently gave it to a friend to use for their cable modem hook up but the installer hooked up the modem using a USB cable. So now I don't know how to set up the network. If this is confusing, basically what happens is the cable from the wall hooks into the modem, then from the modem a cable goes to the USB port in the back of the computer (not the network card). If we try hooking a network cable from the modem to the network card, nothing works (I think the whole thing was setup only to use the USB). Anyway, does anyone know how I'd be able to share this connection? I need it to go to the router and then to two other computers. Thanks.
trashpickinman
not possible to use a modem with a USB connection to a router. but did you try connecting the modem to the router with ethernet cable, and then from the router to the computer? Frank
What modem are they using? They may want to call their ISP to see if they support Ethernet.
cyclingplatypus
You should be able to uninstall the USB driver and remove it from the device manager if it's there then reinstall it using the ethernet port.
mallow
I've had to setup a network doing this before. What I did was ran the modem USB into the "main" computer, and just shared the internet connection with the "Internet Connection Share" thingy built in to Windows. Then hook up the router to the ethernet port on the computer, and your good to go. Only downside to this is that you gotta have the "main" computer on for the internet to work elseware. One other method would be to use an old 133mhz or whatever computer, and install smoothwall or ipcop firewall on it, as they support most USB modems, then you have a ethernet port to go to the switch. Liquid
get a "caRpy" old computer, install a small linux distro that has drivers for that modem, and supports internet connection sharing. Then hook an ethernet cable from that computer to the router port. And walla!!
