Programs & services I NEED and DON'T NEED?

Question

I just reformatted this computer again :crazy::crazy::angry::no: Since I have a 'refreshed" computer what programs and services do I not need and what should I keep? Windows 7 32 bit is the OS. Right now I've (re)installed:

  • NOD 32
  • Revo uninstaller
  • Foxit reader
  • Firefox 7 (will install nightly?)
  • Google Chrome
  • CCleaner
  • File Hippo (checks to see if programs are up to date)
  • O&O Defrag
  • Winrar
  • VLC
  • MP3tag (correct program name?)
  • Foobar

Foxit installed chrome. Also in case one browser is being stupid (for some reason) I can run the other. Also if I'm playing sound in firefox (youtube vid, podcast, etc) and I want to play like tetris I don't need to hear the constant sounds from that along with the sounds of the video or podcast or what-ever.

  • NOD 32
  • Revo uninstaller - If you need something at a pinch, use CCleaner Portable.
  • Foxit reader - Built into Chrome
  • Firefox 7 (will install nightly?) - Chrome
  • Google Chrome
  • CCleaner - Snake Oil.
  • File Hippo (checks to see if programs are up to date)
  • O&O Defrag - Windows built in is MORE then good enough
  • Winrar - 7-Zip
  • VLC
  • MP3tag (correct program name?)
  • Foobar

Things I install on my computer: Outlook, Chrome, MSN Messenger, Microsoft Security Essentials, 7-Zip, FFD-Show.

That's it. Even then that's to much :\ The less you install the better >.>

Well how about not installing so much stuff so you wont need Revo Uninstaller and CCleaner to clean them up all the time.

Tons of that stuff you can just run as portable apps, FireFox, Chrome, VLC, Foxit all have portable versions.

Where is Photoshop and Office 2010? torrents not working? whistle.giflaugh.gif

Installing Office, as for photoshop I don't really ever need to edit pictures, also if I ever did gimp would probably work well enough.

Get rid of the O&O Defrag, in modern day computing, defragmentation is redundant at best. If and when you want to to a defrag, just use Windows 7 built-in defrag, it does the trick.

7-Zip and/or IZArc over WinRar. (Because they are free.)

Don't listen to the naysayers about CCleaner. How is it snake oil to want a one stop button to clear history, cookies, flush DNS cache, and the list goes on? What do they use to do all those functions if they hate CCleaner so bad?

@ articuno1au

Why do you say 7 - Zip instead of Winrar?

Better multithreading support and faster execution.

It's got the fastest libraries out atm :)

Also, the integration with Windows is less... ugly then WinRAR's.

We don't do them as a rule of thumb.

All of these things exist for a reason. If you feel the need to lose them after every session, run Incognito browsing..

CCleaner ought be treated like an emergency tool. Use it only when you must.

The only time I use it is when I have to uninstall a TON of stuff as it skips needless dialogues; and when there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with the install in question.

"stop button to clear history, cookies, flush DNS cache, and the list goes on?"

So what is the rest of the list, because I can not remember the last time I had to do any of those 3 things. If I wanted a button to clear dns cache I would just create a shortcut to the command ipconfig /flushdns but again I can not remember the last time I had to do that. Just looked at the feature list -- don't see anything on there anyone would really need to be honest. If you that paranoid that you need to clear you history and cookies and recent files and mru's etc.. Maybe you should be browsing with a liveCD ;)

As to 7zip over winrar, yeah biggest reason is its actually FREE, vs winrar just doesnt time out on the trial.

Defrag - its built into your OS, it runs on its own even - little use for such thing. If your that worried run a portable tool like defraggler.

Can main system RAM ever be used as video RAM? systemrequirementslab is saying I have a Gig of video RAM, yet I am beyond sure that this system came with 128 MB. I've never changed any part of it except to add more RAM (from less than a gig when I bought it, to about 3 GB right now). There is truely no room inside the case for anything else and there is certainly not a PCI express slot (PCI though, I think).

Sheez... to the CCleaner bashers:

To each his own. If you prefer to leave thousands of little useless files all over your hard drive, more power to you. I guess that's why they are called 'personal' computers. The OP asked for opinions, and he gets berated for using CCleaner. My apologies for adding my own opinion backing up the OP's use of CCleaner.

If you use Paint.NET or PaintShop Pro, you are guaranteed comments like 'couldn't find Photoshop torrents?'

Same for OpenOffice vs Microsoft Office. "What, couldn't find any M$ Office torrents, n00b!?"

(Hmm... I think I saw the above two comments even in this thread...)

It used to be that if you used IE, it was 'Use Firefox!", but now it's even "What!? Firefox? What idiot still uses Firefox and not Chrome?'

And above all else, don't ever let anyone on this site know you believe in one of the various gods... look out....

No-one berated him. I merely called it snake oil, which isn't a bad description of it.

I don't think you were berated either, I merely pointed out that it's not worth doing >.<

The problem is you brought this up in a thread that was mainly about efficiency. People like me/budman/et all are very interested in this kind of stuff and take time to work out what works and what doesn't. So when we see the same old BS repeated all over the place, it is kinda irksome >.< That said, you are clearly allowed to do as you please with your PC, but please trust me when I say it is EXTREMELY rarely to your advantage to run that tool >.<

Lol @ the torrents part. It's kinda true :p

I personally find the Flying Spaghetti Monster to be a fair and amicable leader. His godliness allows me regular blessings of pasta goodness... :p

Drop both the Foxes. Stick with Chrome and Adobe reader (yes, seriously).

I'm not tempted to leave O&O on there, and Hippo can go too.

Did you need a PDFCreator at all? Office suite?

That's just me though, personally...

7zip is awesome, the UI is a tad outdated, but the speed and functionality more than makes up for it.

On my system, the 7zip decompressing benchmark hits 153MB/s, while in reality I get about 30-40MB/s (Due to being read from a hard drive). Huge archives decompress in a few seconds, it's great.

Well its not that deleting useless files (that btw dont affect performance) is bad. Its that CCleaner includes a registry cleaner. That is bad. Registry cleaners are one click away from you not booting into windows or screwing up some useful program like IE or windows explorer. It generally wont happen but honestly its not something that you should use for a general maintenance. The number of entries you remove with a registry cleaner is so small compared to the size of the registry its not even close to a single percent. How can such a small change make any real difference? And fighting temp files is kinda dumb. The system will remove the files as they are no longer used otherwise they don't affect anything. You will just redownload/recreate all the temp files within an hour/day depending on use. It also increases hard drive wear if the system has to recreate temp files its still using.

Oh and keep in mind most utilities such as these were created (well the idea) during the 98 days when it was actually needed.

edit: nm must be a nonlinkable site

The bigger issue is that the items are often recreated when you browse to their site again..

It's a waste of time. Cache was created for a reason.

Registry cleaners are bad as well I agree..

Remove Chrome, Revo, NOD32, Foxit, CCleaner, FileHippo, O&O, Foobar.

Use IE + FF, MSE, Adobe Reader, build-in defragmenting tool, WMP.

Often I agree, but NOD32 is excellent for what little you pay for it.

MSE is the best free choice though, and better than most paid AVs!
