Programs & services I NEED and DON'T NEED?

Question

I just reformatted this computer again :crazy::crazy::angry::no: Since I have a 'refreshed" computer what programs and services do I not need and what should I keep? Windows 7 32 bit is the OS. Right now I've (re)installed:

  • NOD 32
  • Revo uninstaller
  • Foxit reader
  • Firefox 7 (will install nightly?)
  • Google Chrome
  • CCleaner
  • File Hippo (checks to see if programs are up to date)
  • O&O Defrag
  • Winrar
  • VLC
  • MP3tag (correct program name?)
  • Foobar

Often I agree, but NOD32 is excellent for what little you pay for it.

MSE is the best free choice though, and better than most paid AVs!

NOD32 is $39.99 for just the antivirus for one pc. Thats not little.

The only program I think you should remove is O&O Defrag. Windows 7 has a great defragmenter which automatically runs once a week, no configuration required.

Despite what people are saying, there's nothing wrong with WinRAR. If you prefer it over 7-zip, then keep it.

If you're serious about not installing software, then you can check this site for portable software instead - http://portableapps.com/apps

I agree there is nothing wrong with it -- did he pay the $29 for it, then more power too him.. I agree its a fine product.

If you use Paint.NET or PaintShop Pro, you are guaranteed comments like 'couldn't find Photoshop torrents?'

Same for OpenOffice vs Microsoft Office. "What, couldn't find any M$ Office torrents, n00b!?"

(Hmm... I think I saw the above two comments even in this thread...)

If you look closely at the post I made you will see a couple of cute emoticons indicating that the statement was in fact a JOKE. You know, a humorous little aside to make a few people chortle. As my daughters would say "Chillax"

Copernic got the joke.

No "noob" bashing or offence to anyone. I thought that emoticons were invented so as to convey the context of a statement that could be ambiguous. Oh well.

If he has already paid for it, then he should use it, I agree. But once his license dies, he should switch to MSE. Viruses and stuff are kind of getting old now.

No one has asked yet.. but why the 32bit OS?

Better compatibility (I think), also on a external drive all (or most) of the installer files are for 32 Bit OS, not 64. I don't think this computer was built to run 64 bit OS and programs, although it can. Next computer I get will probably have 64 bit by default.
