Looking for boot loader for an ext. usb hdd (not flsh/thumb drive))

Question

Hi all,

I have a spare 2.5" 100GB USB external drive that I want to use for loading GRML (Linux), BartPE (Windows), Ubuntu LiveCD, and maybe a couple of other operating systems. The purpose is to use them for recovery, testing, and demonstration.

I can probably use Grub for this, but frankly I find it to be a pain in the ass to work with, so I'm hoping there's an easier boot loader out there, preferably freeware.

Thanks!

PS: I'm still trying to figure out how to get BartPE onto a USB drive that isn't flash, but that's a topic for another day. :)

Most bootloaders couldn't care less what type of storage an external USB drive is using. And there shouldn't be any difference in putting BartPE on a USB hard drive vs. a USB flash drive. Both are treated the same by most drivers and software.

Thanks, but I'm not worried about that. At this point I'm just looking for a good boot loader that's more user-friendly than Grub.

You would think so, but so far Win2Flash and PEtoUSB are only working with my flash thumb drive, not with any of the three external USB drives I've tried. I tried writing BartPE to the thumb drive then copying the partition over to the USB HDD, but that didn't work, either. Any ideas on what may be going wrong there?

Thanks again :)

The only boot loader I know of that can do it is GRUB.. There are a ton of "GRUB creators" though, perhaps that will make it easier?

That might work. Any particular ones I should look at?
