Need a program to monitor online chat activites

Question

I need a program that will allow me to see everything that is typed in a online chat. My daughter, who is 10, refuses to listen to me about not chatting on a online game that she plays, and her mother does not seem to think there is any problems with her. I need to find a way to simply monitor what is typed so I can assure myself that she is not saying anything that she should not. TIA

I feel that instead of spying on her you should maybe supervise gaming sessions with her, educating her as to why revealing personal info is a bad idea... Spying on her is not going to make her realise what she is doing is wrong.

I do when I am home, I am concerned about the times that I am not. My wife does not watch her at all when she is playing, and my daughter is very smart, but at the same time I want to watch out for her. Are there any programs that will do as I need, or any other options?

My recommendation would be to disable the computer from her being able to use it while you are not there. Thats what my dad did.

That will teach her that there are consequences for not doing what you are told to do. Tell her that she has to earn the privilege to be able to use the computer when you are not home. It is not a right which so many kids think nowadays.

IMO, just get a router that will allow you to designate timed access to the internet.. or will block certain ports during hours A-Z on X days per week.

Depending on the game, you may be able to block the port to the game's chat server and leave the rest of the ports in-tact..

don't listen to the people who think this is a stupid idea and you shouldn't go too far. there is absolutely no such thing as going too far when it comes to the safety of your child. They can "grow up" in their later years and learn to not over share with strangers. but for now, it is your responsibility to make sure she is safe regardless of how much it costs or what troubles you have to go to.

as for your problem, I am not sure if anything other than a keylogger will help. since this is a game and not just a chat protocol, it's more difficult to separate the game content from the chat content. you may be able to ask the developers of the game for a log of all chats from the account.

One option is to have a program take screen shots every minute or so, it's going to be time consuming to view all the screen shots but refer to my first rant when it comes to spending time on this.

If you read in chat logs that she said something you didn't want her to say, it's too late.

If you think that chatting in online games will do bad things for her, you're a paranoid. Seriously. The worse thing that might happen is her giving her real name - and then what? The Internet != 4chan's /b/ board.

If you're concerned about people showing inadequate things on their webcam to her...as I said, it'd be too late anyway, and she'd learn not to redo it.

Furthermore, spying on her will make her a) dislike you and b) find ways to circumvent it, such as going at a friend's house and playing from there.

What online game? See if the game has parental control options / settings.

+1

I've got daughters online, too. Most of the online games that kids are allowed on have a parental control available.

BTW, there is a fine balance here. I pay attention to what my kids do and who they're talking to, but I have to admit I don't feel a need to see each and every conversation. They both DO know what to watch out for, but in a way I'm fortunate to live in a very small (and VERY isolated) community.

Web-based game, animaljam.com run by National Geographic. the only thing I can do is enable 'safe chat' which allows only certain words to be used, and I can also see what time/how long the account was on.

Those are pretty good limitations, and I'd take heart that it's run by NatGeo; they're big and have plenty of motivation to make sure the environment they provide is safe.

I also use Windows Live Family Protection (part of the Windows Live downloads), and I've been very happy with what it provides. My kids can't visit a site unless either I or their mother approve it for them, they can't use Live Messenger with any contacts that we don't approve, and all of their e-mail contacts need to be approved as well. In your case, this might be useful, since it means that if your daughter tries to give a chat contact the chance to reach her off the site, it has to be approved.

It also DOES record chat transcripts.

Sorry for my reply to such an old topic. I got it by chance. Actually, the same situation happens on me now. My small nephew is addicted to the chat with some of his dirty mind friends and keeps chatting for hours which i really suspect consists of very very bad words,, i am always out during the day time in my shop,, i wanted to install a keylogger on which i can monitor all the keystrokes and control on his ugly words,, but as soon as i install a free keylogger there is a message popping up that there are some virus or trojan etc,, etc,, I can hardly find a safe and free keylogger to use.
