email client + google

Question

I highly depend on my gmail for email, calendar and tasks. I want an email client that can cooperate all of those, if possible. If I change anything online, phone, pc, and want it to be syncronized across. I use MS Outlook, but obviously not the best option for Google.

Any recommendations?

If you find something more workable feel free to post it, it's a bit tricky to sync email AND calendar AND tasks among all those devices. Plus, do you need to sync contacts too?

I suspect you've already know most of this, but just in case:

Phone: You didn't mention what type of phone, but you should definitely stick with an Android phone, it'll sync everything with Gmail/Calendar/Tasks/Contacts. Otherwise iPhones w/ Gmail IMAP should sync the email OK. You'd need to use iTunes for syncing the calendar/contacts but I think there may be paid apps to do this over the air?

Desktop/Laptop: It's way, way easier to just use GMail/Calendar/Tasks via Chrome or any web browser. But if you insist on using a software client the best solution is probably Thunderbird with GMail set up via IMAP. There are a few addons you can install into Thunderbird to sync the calendar, tasks, & contacts, unfortunately these addons kind of slow down Thunderbird's performance. You can Google around for some ideas, I have this set up & working on my work computer but can't remember the addons offhand.

If you want to stick with Outlook, try to use Outlook 2010 with GMail set up via IMAP. The official method for calendar/reminders is Google Calendar Sync but I'm not too fond of it personally (reminders don't always sync correctly between Google Calendar & Outlook calendar). Not sure on the best way to sync GMail contacts with Outlook, that's a whole issue to deal with.

If you have a Google Apps for Business account then Google Apps Sync might be able to take care of all the syncing with Outlook)

In situations where Outlook is a requirement you're better off moving your email/calendar/etc to a Microsoft Exchange environment to keep everything in sync, but that may not be workable just for 1 account.

Yeah, Android all the way! I have the Nexus One.

I want a desktop client so I can have all my 3 gmail + 1 hotmail account in one place. I know Thunderbird is good, but as you said, the addons will slow it down; and too much of a hassle imo.

I found this article which gave me some ideas, I might try one of them, the Zimbra app. I'll search more and what I end up with. MS Outlook is not a requirement at all, btw.

I'd be inclined to suggest Thunderbird also.

It may be worth checking out Google Gears again.

I heard that it had been re-commenced with HTML5 support.. Worth a look? :)
