Checking for Packet Loss

Recommended Posts

call up your cable company and ask them to test for packet loss. you'll need to disable any firewall before any packet loss test.

I currently have a high packet loss rate. They're coming over to switch me from the low to the "high band" whatever that means.

The packet loss tester didn't seem to work. When the guy was here configuring our antenna he ran something in the command prompt that tested for packet loss. I don't know if it was a command prompt command or a seperate program though.

this is what they do in the command prompt usually..

ping <someaddress> -t

they look to see if anything times out.

It wasn't ping. It was something where it sent a certain number of packets of a specified size to a certain location and the display was like a bunch of @ and the ones that were lost were something else. He was getting about 10% packet loss when he did it, which is why I'm wondering.

sounds like a program using ping to me... you can also specify packet size with ping... its what all the major telecom companies use to test connectivity to routers and such...

Dont underestimate the ping utility

yup, that's ping.

he prolly had some 'custom' version, but this is exactly what ping does.."sent a certain number of packets of a specified size to a certain location and the display " output

pathping command is also good, it's like ping combined with traceroute
