Copernic Reporter Posted September 12, 2011 Reporter Share Posted September 12, 2011 Cuba Announces Release of the World's First Lung Cancer Vaccine Cohibas Cuba is known for exporting cigars, but it might soon be known for exporting a lung cancer vaccine researchers say can turn advanced lung cancer into a manageable chronic illness. From the island nation known for the quality of its cigars comes some pretty big news today: Xinhua reports that Cuban medical authorities have released the first therapeutic vaccine for lung cancer. CimaVax-EGF is the result of a 25-year research project at Havana?s Center for Molecular Immunology, and it could make a life or death difference for those facing late-stage lung cancers, researchers there say. CimaVax-EGF isn?t a vaccine in the preventative sense--that is, it doesn?t prevent lung cancer from taking hold in new patients. It?s based on a protein related to uncontrolled cell proliferation--that is, it doesn?t prevent cancer from existing in the first place but attacks the mechanism by which it does harm. spacer
That's pretty awesome. I hope this "vaccine" really works, because that would be an amazing discovery and a huge leap forward in the fight against cancer. No to mention that I unfortunately have several people in my family, and know several people in my girlfriend's family that smoke and have smoked for a very long time. It's inevitable that one or more of them will get lung cancer eventually. So I am really hoping this is for real.

LOC Veteran Posted September 13, 2011 Veteran Share Posted September 13, 2011 good news for smokers? You can develop lung cancer from other things also you know. Not to mention a cancer that has spread to the lungs etc.
OuchOfDeath
great news and great news for smoker. it would be funny if they ban smokers for taking lung vaccine and then all the smokers would quit right away. Yes, because the threat of cancer totally stops people from smoking these days.

Shadrack
Yes, because the threat of cancer totally stops people from smoking these days. Education on the effects of smoking and lung cancer has certainly reduced its numbers. But yeah, still a lot of smokers out there.
Lexcyn
How much should I bet this never gets released outside of Cuba? Corporations will lose a ton of money not being able to sell chemo drugs over and over again. Sad, but the truth.

Xilo
Look at Loc's post above your post. From Wikipedia... The main causes of any cancer include carcinogens (such as those in tobacco smoke), ionizing radiation, and viral infection. Chance of radiation is low. Asbestos has been ripped out in most buildings to conform to safety code. The viral infections aren't really common to cause lung cancer for the most part... This is a general statement about cancers in general. However for lung cancer, smoking is pretty much the main cause of it...

However for lung cancer, smoking is pretty much the main cause of it... Every single person on the planet has cancer cells, we just get sick and die from them when the cells multiply beyond our capacity to control them or limit them (or some sort of mutation causes widespread cell propagation). While smoking is the main cause for lung cancer (among others of course) it naturally isn't the only cause. This "vaccine" is more of a treatment than a vaccine of course. It doesn't prevent the cancer (since you really can't, since we all have cancer cells as I stated above) but from the article and other things I've read today it stops it from spreading and getting out of control. It improves the quality of life for end stage patients and extends the lifespan of others. This is great news of course. If they can use it for other types of cancer, it's even better news. Personally I have always felt that if you smoke you should waive all rights to medical insurance or make the premiums and co-pays so high for those individuals you might as well not have insurance. Its not fair of all the health problems they inflict on others. As a child I was always sickly due to 2nd hand smoke. It wasnt until my mother stopped smoking and I stopped going around the family that I started getting better. My lungs would be in much better shape now had I not had to deal with this as a child. neoadorable
good news and kudos to Cuba, we've been hearing about their medical capabilities for years and it's time it showed and they pulled their weight. if this works...wow, incredibly exciting! and why are you guys arguing about smoking? i have nothing against it and as a 20 year veteran of smoking i'm no hypocrite, but as a recent quitter i can also tell you with confidence once you get to a certain age you just feel it's bad for you and you have to stop. the people who don't simply don't want to stop. it's also a woeful waste of money these days. you're literally burning money. spend it on your hobbies or family or car or whatever, get the pleasure without the waste. Crender - why do you want Mars to start smoking? It stopped with that millions of years ago i think
