Cursor blinking... :)

Recommended Posts

Being a sysadmin (and a valid one I should add) it's a bit weird to ask for help, anyway I'd like to share this problem to you. :)

I currently have a Duron 900@1400 with a watercooled peltier cell. I removed the whole cooling engine due to a imminent processor upgrade.

After cleaning the L1, L6 and L7 connectors to remove all the modifications I did, I started my rig, and my XP Pro saluted me with the Logon screen.

I rose the FSB to 111 to reach the Ghz, started it up again but it was unstable, so I came back to 106 (which infact is 212, due to the doubled FSB in AMD processors) and everything worked fine.

These were the premises. What's the problem you're probably asking? :)

Yesterday evening I started my rig and nothing appeared on the screen. After various bios resets (probably the FSB overclock was not that appreciated) I gave up, sure that I fried my cpu. :p

This morning I tried to start it again and it worked, the problem is that the OS doesn't completely load. After the bios POST and the SCSI adapter check, WinXP loads the primary kernel parameters regarding the partitions (the text line you see that goes from left to right), then it locks up. I mean, the NTOSKRNL module doesn't start, the cpu doesn't emit a sound, the hard disk doesn't move, and so on. Just a damn cursor blinking.

Any idea of what could have happened? BTW, this evening I'll try changing the dimms, if it works I'll post the solution.

Sorry for the long post and thanks for your interest.
