(JRock) Dir En Grey's new CD!

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I just wanted to know if any Jrock (Japanese Rock, Visual Kei) fans can be found on neowin.net

I recently got the lastest Dir En Grey(my personal favorite band) CD, called VULGAR. I got the Limited Edition that comes with a DVD (it contains the music video for Obscure, which is a great and somewhat scary track. Kyo is a god). I like the fact that they included a small booklet with english translations of the tracks ^_^

SO if anyone else listened to it, I would like to know what you think. I personally love it, many people don't, they complain that the style is too different and that the Dir En Grey essence is not there anymore. (Probably the same people who whined when Six Ugly came out)

They are trying different things as usual, and I just love how it came out. The music is more aggressive, with a strong metal influence, Kyo's voice is a good as always, Kaoru and Die on the guits are the best. Toshiya and his amazing basslines seems to be sort of less present. I can usually tell who wrote the song by listening to the instrument that stands out the most, like Cage for instance, with the awesome bass solo. Shinya is great with the upbeat rythms altough more discrete on this one as well.

Also, the lyrics match the title, MARMALADE CHAINSAW is indeed vulgar. I love how Kyo yells "SUCK ME" XD

Usually bands style vary from CD to CD, but Dir En Grey makes it vary from song to song. That's what I really love. Some songs on Vulgar have Pop, Metal, and Hip Hop influences, it's really interesting :)

Overall, I really love it. ^_^

(I really wish I do get a reply, I feel like i'm the only geek in the world who likes that band).

oh yeah, my friend just told me to get it. he said it's a really good album after a few listens. i haven't listend to deg for a long time now since i've found several other bands. they're just not melodic enough for my tastes, although i still like the classics like akuro no oka, cage, and yokan.

i don't really like them that much now. too many songs are noisy and well, zan-like.

I am a fan of some Japanese pop and rock music. I have lived in Japan for 3 years now so I have a lot of exposure to the stuff. Dir En Grey is pretty good, though I don't own any of their albums. Anyway, I will rent their new one and give it a listen on your recommendation.

YAAAY REPLIES!

I'm now the happiest geek in the universe ;)

akuro no oka, cage, and yokan.

Yeeeaaah! Great songs. Yokan sounded very pop to me which was not a bad thing at all. Die's solo is just great! Just like the accoustic guitar in 304 Goushi tsu Hakushi no sakura (i put the space in because the swear filter is not japanese friendly)

Actually, many songs are Zan like, but they sound more like a mix between the Missa style (You know, Garden and everything, upbeat) but with stronger overdrive. At worst, you'll find it interesting, i'm sure :)

oh yeah, garden is cool too. i didn't like gauze at all, though. and there are too many copy bands now, like due le quartz, la'mule, das vasser (although they had some cool songs).

what other bands do you listen to? i'm always looking for new bands to try out.

I'm discovering Moi dix Moi. I never was too much of a fan of Malice Mizer tho, I got two CDs and found only two songs I truely love on them. The first singer's voice is too... uh... weird to me. And he looks like Boy George wich I find pretty disturbing. Mana's stuff is growing on me slowly ;)

I like Onmyou-za, the fact that the lead singer is female is very intersting. The songs I listened to sound very Cage-like (if I had to classify them)

I also love Hide's stuff.

I discovered Iceman lately. I already heard one of their songs during the Gravitation OVA (which rocked) and the other songs seems to be like that, which truely rocks.

OH, when I went to Otakon they had a JRock music video session which was great. (I left before Yatta, which is a good thing.)

Discovered Siam Shade (violent yet upbeat and happy. Or not.)

Aucifer was nice, but too... uhm... Japanese david bowie to me. But that's me ;)

The brilliant green was utterly annoying to my ears. Go! Go! 7188 was ABSOLUTELY GREAT! The music video for Jetto Ninjin (Jet Carrots) was hilarious! Too bad I can't find that song anywhere...

EDIT: I also take this moment to add that La:Sadies (the band from which Dir En Grey evolved) is worth a listen. The tracks are very missa-like. Rebirth is a good track, it sounds like it was recorded in a toilet bowl, but hey, they were an indies band back then ;)

lol, i love the brilliant green!

and siam shade too. my band used to play the covers and they're really talented, but unfortunately, they disbanded a while ago. the concert (i think v9) was awesome, since they played some indie songs.

no l'arc~en~ciel fans here? they were one of the most popular, and i still like them.

if you like rock, try fake? fake? is a band composed of inoran from luna sea and ken lloyd from oblivion dust (now that's really rock), and the music is really cool.

malice mizer is nice, but the old malice mizer, when gackt was the vocalist, but he is awesome as a soloist.

i listen to all sorts of jrock, ranging from visual shock to more mellow ones, like mr. children, to more pop style like judy and mary and the brilliant green. also listening to smaller groups like bump of chicken, shaka labbits, and a little olivia.

we should have more jrock threads here! :)

Well we only saw (or I paid attention to) only one brilliant green video, which was the one with the plush marionettes. The only thing I liked was the fact that the squirell who was drumming was perfectly in sync with the beat.

I never listened much to l'arc~en~ciel actually ;)

Whoa that sounds cool! I will definitively ... erm.. sample! (it's hard to get JRock cds ;.;)

Judy and Mary is fun! Cheese Pizza was so cute! So sweet you get instant cavities XD

There was an Olivia track they played, Dekinai I think, but I can't find it anywhere :weeps:

Right now I'm listening to a track from MUCC's new album, Syogyo Shisoukyou Jidai and I find it awesome!

(it's good for a first listen)

Very upbeat and punk/ska ish :)

And yeah we definitively need more jrock threads! go for jrock!

L'Arc is great! I prefer their older stuff like flower, dive to blue, kaze ni kienaide, etc. GLAY's old stuff is rather good as well though they are maybe more pop than rock overall. Siam Shade was mentioned here earlier I see. They have some good old stuff as well like: Glacial Love, 1/3, etc... Anyway, either of you guys speak or understand Japanese? The songs are (often) much better if you do, though sometimes surprisingly worse...

i know a handful of words. :D my japanese friends (and some friends who know japanese) tell me the meanings of the songs. i still like the music itself, though. :)

l'arc IS great, although i don't know what's going on with them now. hyde seems to be doing his solo work, and his best song is "hello" but his voice is getting worse.

the really old siam shade songs like "no control" and "dreamless world" are nice. i really like siam shade 5 (that album), but most of their songs sound the same, unfortunately.

glay is ok, but their songs sound the same. their "unknown" song is generic too, but yeah, i agree, the older songs are better, like "yuuwaku."

the current state of jrock is rather sad, though, which is why i find myself listening to lots of the older bands and following them. newer bands like chemistry (ok, that's more pop/r and b) and blankey jet city just don't interest me.

Yeah, new stuff doesn't appeal to me either. R/B is really huge now and I am not a big fan... And if I see Morning Musume on TV every minute for much longer, I am definately going to kill myself... ;) Yaiko (Yaida Hitomi) is really good! If you guys like pop as well you should definately check her out. Oh, and shout outs to anyway who likes old Judy and Mary stuff, f'n classic...

I don't, I only know a few words, and have a vague idea of the syntax ;P

However I am good with foreign languages and with the help of my friend who speaks japanese to an extent, a dictionary and free time I am able to get the meaning of some songs ;P

I read tranlsations on centigrade and crysania as well :)

For instance, I discovered the Mitsu to Tsuba/Tsumi to Batsu wordplay by myself :)

I saw the kanjis were printed backwards, and I found the wordplay awesome. I would love to speak japanese JUST to do that ;)

*listening to: Schwardix Marvally - Onigami Fuurai*

yo minna-san~ I registered in here JUST for this post after Mr.Daemon sent me the URL XD

like dreamz I prefer the older Dir en Grey stuff, but Vulgar's not bad... the video for Obscure rocks XD

my fave bands are Moi Dix Mois, Dir en Grey, Iceman, Kagerou (TOO COOL) and T.M. Revolution (their Otakon show just rocked XD) ^^ some Malice Mizer when Gackt was the singer... discoverig some Glay... like Du? Le Quartz..

there are a few other bands I managed to get only one or two songs, like Schwardix Marvally, Janne Da Arc, Maschera, Raphael, La: Sadies, MUCC, Buck Tick, they're all great XD

like Luna Sea, L'Arc, and Aucifer so-so, they all have good songs and less good ones >.< Siam Shade's nice but all the songs look alike to me.. o.o Do As Infinity's half-boring... ;P

The Pillows are great (did they do anything aside the FLCL soundtracks...???)

*song changed to X Japan - X*

oh yeah, and X Japan's always nice too XD

Du? Le Quartz, a Dir en Grey copy..?? I really don't think so.. some songs might look alike a little, but really... first of all the vocals make it really different. Du? has some songs like Byou that might look Missa era Dir en Grey (Missa's DEG's first CD), but I've never heard any slow and poetic songs like 304 Gout/b>su Hakushi no Sakura, or hard ones from Du?... some songs like Monochrome don't look like any Dir to me either XD

Some songs might be inspired by DEG alright, then again someone can say that Luna Sea song sounds like L'Arc... and it's not like people who start bands are all going to invent their whole new style and have never listened to music before.... and I'd love to make music that sounds like Dir en Grey if I had a band XD

Anyway, either of you guys speak or understand Japanese?? The songs are (often) much better if you do, though sometimes surprisingly worse..

I do XD well I'm not perfect but I'd be able to survive somehow if I was just suddenly teleported in Japan.... but it doesn't help me understand Siam Shade screaming or Dir en Grey and Moi Dix Mois's too advanced vocabulary >.<

it's true it does ruin some songs XD used to think that Mini Moni Telephone song was just sweet until I paid attention to the lyrics.... same with Card Captor Sakura's 3rd ending Fruits Candy.... >.<

-edit- oh yeah, my MSN list has a cruel lack of JRock fans... mind if I add some of you in ^^

How could I ever forget TM Revolution! They rock XD

Seeing them live at Otakon was indeed something, and their english is not half-bad. Except at some point he said something that sounded alot like ass instead of has. So the crowd laughed.

I found it cute ^_^
