Back up to Blu-Ray with disk spanning

Question

Hi All,

My work server has been filling up with unused raw video footage and we desperately need to dump it onto some sort of hard format. As such I have been looking into blu-ray archiving solutions. (I would rather stay away from LTO Tape).

I am having trouble finding a program that will adequately catalog and span data across multiple disk (keep in mind, i need this for a professional or enterprise application)

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Why stay away from LTO, for that matter why not go to hard drive, $ per gig is cheap, it is over writable/reusable, and can be taken off site easily. Short of that have you considered a hardware backup solution like the barracuda backup, it sends backup to two datacenters in their cloud plus keeps a local backup on its internal hard disk. It is cheaper than many enterprise software solutions like backup exec and in many cases faster.

We like to keep our data internal and due to file size and frequency of use would prefer something in the same room as our editors. I inherently distrust harddrives. While some of these backups may be checked or copied from as often as every few weeks, others may sit idle for a period of a year or more. I need something that wont lock up if I dont spin it. . Moreover, I am not totally convinced of the superiority of LTO tape vs blu ray. If you have some info in that regard I would love to hear. However, my questions still stands.

Is there any software availble for buisness or enterprise solutions which can span data across multiple blu ray disk and keep a active catalog of that info.

Thanks,

Just about all backup software supports optical medium. Backupexec, barracuda backup, nt backup. The issue is that the medium is so small if you don't have a juke box it will take hrs to get a successful backup manually switching disks.

Retention should be done offsite on a medium that will not outdate itself in 10 years. A onsite nas and offsite nas syncing.

We arent talking about TB of info at a time. I work in the branding department of a medical company. We are using these disks as backups for our raw video footage. Clipped versions are kept on our corporate SAN (which IT Backs up to LTO independently. As such, the most data we will need to burn at a time is 200 gigs, and even that is pushing it. Are you saying ( assuming we dont invest in a jukebox) that all of those systems will span my info seemlessly across multiple disk and then catalog them accordingly?

And lets assume we actually buy a juke box - same question. Will I be able to review a running list of my archived assests and their physical location?
