[Pic] Windows 8 "Metro UI" summed up in 1 pic

as a designer I love it. Designers always say keep it simple and thats what they did. Sure its flat and square, but look at OS X its *mostly* grey and flat as well. This biggest difference in OS X is that where there is color, there is a gradient and where there is a window it has rounded corners. Metro is all about bright colors, simple design. only the information you need in as simple a way as possible. UI design is evolving and moving in many different directions, there is no right or wrong. The other big difference that for some reason most people cant grasp by now is that Microsoft takes big design leaps from version to version unlike Apple. If people haven't figured out that by now then I don't know.

The one thing I hope they fix UI wise is the metro start button/menu mixed with the aero taskbar

I don't understand how the start screen is different from the start menu. Sure it's larger and all, but to me it's not different that the file menu change from Office 07 -> Office 10.

It's larger and pops up by default, but otherwise the same... isn't it?

Interfaces don't stagnate.... people do......

keeping this in mind the changes from windows 7's UI to this metro UI FOR DESKTOP are only changes for the hell of it it appears so far.

for a tablet this is something new alltogether.

also from the enterpise standpoint it's not about training. the animations and UI flair of this version are distracting to the employees.

you know that video of the guy using kinect to manage cloud servers???? that is how tacky it is from a business standpoint.

The file menu in Office 2010 is a horrible abomination. Covering up the entire document, whose stupid idea was that?

Really great for scaring people though...

Novice user: "OMG, where did my document go!?

Funny.. I really think it can work. I like the idea of the tiles, having active content, and just having your most popular / most used applications right there. It's a great idea.

I think it'll work even with a keyboard and mouse. It needs some refinement and things need to gel a little better and there's no doubting it's a big gamble by Microsoft after years of sticking with the "tried and trusted" Start Menu but really I'm quite keen and I think it'll work.

I'll follow development with interest!

Just pointing this out... having this run as a "start screen" means my 30 inch monitor is dedicated to 1 app at a time, there is no way to resize apps/windows, etc. so I have a 2560x1600 view of the weather app.. Great...

I'm sure the setup system will have a Tablet/Touch PC or Not type of option where you can switch back and fourth between GUI modes... at least lets hope.

Switching around is easy as a click.. not sure why people have a huge fear.

I'm pretty sure MS will keep large display folks in mind and implement features to better support them in metro ui. They did after all say from 7 to 70 inch screens is their design goal :) This build is entirely to get the ball running on the tablet design / interface goals. The standard interface is very easily accessed and feature rich for those who don't want metro.

So don't run the weather app or any of the immersive apps and you won't have a problem

Nobody's forcing you to run tablet-specific apps on your desktop. You can continue to run desktop software the same as always and the only Metro screen that you'll ever encounter is the Start screen.

In before Callum fanboy taints it by "Microsoft has stated that it will work well with mouse and keyboard hurr durr".

Your post doesn't even suggest that it doesn't work well with a mouse and keyboard :s If anything, your post suggests that it does because Windows 1.0 worked well with a keyboard, ha.

By the way, I don't think you understand the concept of a fanboy ;) I criticise Microsoft when they deserve it.

If all you do is surf the net, and check you email/twitter/facebook this is great. If you actually multitask with your pc this is ****. I'll be turning this metro crap off at install. If I had a tablet, sure this would be great. As it is this is fail IMO. I'm a long time Windows user, and I don't care for this at all. Keep the tablet crap for the kiddies, but us folks that use our PCs for work or more than one thing at a time using multiple monitors don't need this metro crap.

Don't get me wrong, I like the metro idea on something like a tablet or phone. Both or which are absolutely useless for anything other than generic gaming, email, and web surfing.

Not sure why they're trying to shove this crap down the normal desktop users throat!

Works perfectly fine in my multitasking environment o.O Things are also certainly going to be many time better on the final version where it's actaully filled with apps you want, and not just a bunch of mostly useless demo apps designed just for developers to get some idea. This isn't really a build users should be basing much opinion on just yet.

Microsoft has just scratched the surface of interface, with this preview. A lot of features are still missing. Even those that were shown at the BUILD event.

At the end of first event, Sinofsky hinted, that with Windows 7 developers preview, they didn't showed any interface changes in the OS. They were only revealed first time in the beta. So we'll see the real thing, the more consumer focused stuff, when the beta is launched. This is only for developers to test out new technology and application model.

I prefer Windows 1.0 in this comparison. Seriously, w7 phones look so tardy but as a main OS? I'll stick with 7, thanks. Is be embarrassed to be seen using 8.

If you are literally embarrassed to be using a computer operating system, you have some major problems in your life.

This is really for tablets. There is no way that this is meant as a desktop replacement.

Agreed 100%. However, I could see grandparents and kids using it on a single monitor as a "my first computer" motif, since it'll match their phones and tablets, etc.

For professionals, and I assume 99% of the people here on Neowin, the new metro tablet UI won't be their default configuration on their desktops. Not by a mile.

Since it's easy to switch from and even disable permanently (see front page article today), I don't see the problem.

PS The metro UI looks MILES better than the hacked together IOS interface application that just showed up in OS X, so you won't hear the usual din of Apple fanboys criticizing metro.

I can see metro on touch devices but not on a desktop. What a waste of labor for employees having to get though the tiles and crap. They should make metro/tiles as a add/remove feature and I assure you, on my system it would be removed....

Sums up most of my thoughts about that ugly thing.Seriously, Steve Jobs was right when he said Microsoft doesn't have a taste at all.

Your grammar is total garbage in "it's" current form too.

A -> B, therefore Not C.Not everyone here is a native English speaker, but everyone has his own aesthetic standards, having bad grammar does not imply being "wrong" on aesthetic views.

If you are literally embarrassed to be using a computer operating system, you have some major problems in your life.

You won't feel embaressed if your tech friends come and see you using DOS or Windows 95/98 as your main OS ? For many people windows 8 in its current look is considered really retarded thing, and it can get you emabaressed infront of them.
