Girl wins at Earth Science Olympics

A 16-year-old student from Tokyo won a gold medal in this year's International Earth Science Olympics in Italy, where 104 high school students from 26 economies were tested on earth sciences over 10 days.

Midori Watanabe, who is in her first year at Ouin, a private high school for girls, is taking home a gold medal from the event, which ended Wednesday, the government announced.

Three other Japanese students competed. Keishiro Azami, 17, of Kawagoe High School in Saitama Prefecture, and Takehiro Matsuzawa, 17, of Eiko Gakuen High School in Kanagawa Prefecture, received silver medals. Ryo Matsuoka, 17, of Asahikawa Nishi High School in Hokkaido was awarded a bronze medal.
