Windows Media Player Closes Itself

Question

About a week ago Windows Media Player started closing itself as soon as I tried to play any song or video, I was busy so didn't look into it and then the developer preview of 8 came out so I upgraded to it to try it out (this isn't my main machine so don't say its my own fault for using a pre-release OS as my main :p). WMP worked again fine until a couple of hours ago and then the same problem started again.

I've done a virus scan with MSE and Malwarebytes and found nothing, deleted all of the .wmdb files to clear the library but when I played a song the same happened even with an empty library. I've also tried removing it in programs and features and then adding it again and that didn't sort it so I'm out of ideas.

I don't want to change to another media player so please don't just tell me to use something better because I like it however I do like the look of the Zune Media Player so I'm downloading it just now to try it out and if I like it I'll move to but, would be nice if I could get this fixed though.

Thanks in advance :)

I don't think you can download media player 12?

I have an audio enhancer plugin I use but I uninstalled it and the same thing happens :(

I like the look of Zune, it fits in with Windows 8 really well but the only thing is I can hear a huge difference in my music quality without the audio enhancer :(

did you "upgrade" to windows 8 or did you do a fresh install? if it's a fresh install then I bet it's something else you are running (like a plug in) that's making it do this on two different windows installations.

if it's an upgrade then it's just as puzzling cause why would the upgrade have solved your problem temporarily... ?

Does launching it from the command line offer any output when it closes, or does it just launch the program and send you to a new prompt?

I don't have a Windows box around at the moment to remind myself whether or not it does.

@capr I upgraded which makes it ever weirder yeah "/

@CoMMo it just sends me to a new prompt

Currently using Winamp, I liked Zune but doesn't work with either XDeskCover or CAD plus the audio enhancer I had for WMP works with Winamp too. It's a shame because I really liked the design of Zune :(

It won't run because the OS isn't supported :( Thanks anyways, would have more than likely fixed in on Win7, I'll live with Winamp just now until the beta comes out and then I'll do a clean install. Like I said this isn't my main machine anyway so it's not that big an issue :)

It found two broken codecs and removed them but it still just closes itself although now if I play something from the library it closes itself straight away instead of hanging and slowing my computer down. Thanks for all the help, it's really appreciated :)
