'06 iMac won't power on - can I test with a normal PSU?

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine has a late '06 intel-based iMac that randomly lost power and will not come back to life. It has no signs of receiving power; won't post, etc. He already went through all of the standard troubleshooting. I figure it's probably a dead PSU or blown capacitor (which I wouldn't know how to look for or fix, anyway....) but if it's a bad PSU, would I be bale to temporarily power the iMac using my normal computer's corsair PSU?

He's thinking about bringing it to me to take a look at before he spends $200+ at an Apple store. I've never opened an iMac so I don't really know what I'll be dealing with...

I don't think it will work. AFAIK they don't use the same type of power headers.

Try taking a look at ifixit.com for how to open it and the power supply requirements. You can also go to Apple.com for past manuals and get the power specs.
