WHS 2011 & HTPC?

Question

I have a new Machine that I want to setup as a Windows Home Server. I have an XBOX 360 and a logitech revue. One of my biggest problems is viewing MKV on my TV. I have to use an old laptop connected HDMI to my TV just to watch 1080p. I have tried tversity, ps3media server, serviio, etc... These will not play anything over 720p without lagging on both the 360 and the googleTV. Now I could make the small PC that fits nicely on my TV stand just an HTPC but I would love if it could perform double duty. What can I do? As you can see I do not lack for things to play video on my TV I just don't have anything that likes MKV.

That new one, umm.. thinking........... AH HA Boxee should be able to play MKV just fine so you could install that on your server. Or you can just get a Windows Home Server and then a WDTV Live (or Plus) and that streams MKV over LAN. :) That's what I do.

I'll try the Boxee thing before I go and buy ANOTHER media player. Thanks!

just some questions.

What are the specs of the laptop

how are you playing the mkv local, network, cable or a wireless connection?

on the xbox are you streaming the mkv via a cable connection or via wireless

if on the xbox is it being streamed via media centre or direct via the dashboard?

I tried Boxee and it would play however because of something with WHS services it will not output audio. I tried a couple solution I found about manually starting audio services, but none worked.

With regards to the other questions I have an old Toshiba laptop that has an HDMI connection. Now the server itself is connected to a gigabit router. Now my Revue and Xbox are on a 10/100 switch in the living room that is connected to the 1gig router. I plan after I get my part from Newegg to use a wireless N 4-port gateway. Also I have tried playing videos directly from Video Library and Windows Media Center with the same result.

Windows home server 2011 is really neat and would hate to lose it but I don't want to have to convert 1.5TB of 1080p video just to get it to play on my TV. Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Get the WD TV player and just stream it from the home server. It plays MKVs by default and has the interface of Boxee/Roku or whatever on your nice big HD TV. :)

You will always lag when streaming 1080p if you transcode to your xbox360 or revue. You need a pc with a more powerful graphics card to properly trancode. You may also need a dts encoder to get audio
