Going Wireless .. Recommended practices?

Recommended Posts

I'm going wireless at my home and am wondering what are some general practices I should follow regarding security. I assume I should shut off the SSID or whatever it's called, right?

Thanks my hhhhhhhhomies.

If you disable SSID broadcasts I believe your wireless will stop working completely. I would enable WEP, and MAC address filtering for security. For problem free (well, almost) operation, I would change the SSID to something that is not common (maybe a word that comes well to you) and also, change the channel to 11. Most 2.4 GHz phones and equipment will use the lower channels. This will help with less interference.

There is plenty of ways to clone MAC addresses. There is even a program out there (I haven?t tested it myself) that can break 128 bit WEP (I believe) and also, clone the MAC to one that is added to the filtering table. I use both MAC filtering and WEP because they are fairly easy to set up, and I believe the best way to secure your data.

1) Fowen, apparently you have no clue about wireless, as disabling the SSID broadcast doesn't kill your wireless connection. Jeez.

2) I'm leaving WEP out of the picture

3) That WiFi spray is funny :D

Where do ya live??? :::Thinks to self, I could log into Neowin as dougkinzinger in no time!! muahahah  :::

but you asked him to leave wep off...if you can log in as dougkinziger in no time, you should be able to do the same even if he has wep on...
