well, if you're getting broadband, your ISP will usually provide you with a modem. As for networking, all you will need is a router (much better than a hub), network cards for each computer, and cat5 cable. All you have to do is plug everything in, set up the network wizard (in XP at least), and you're good to go.

Prices for network cards are about $5 each

Router is about $50

Network cable - varies on how much you need

These prices are off the top of my head... so they aren't exactly accurate.

you don't even need to use the networking wizard. plug in the modem, let it power on. connect the modem to the router and the router to each PC while bth PC's are off. Power on the modem and wait for the diagnostics and once all the lights are lit up properly, power on your PC's and you're online.

you just need a network card in both computers and a crossover cable.

crossover cables cost about ?2

network cards maybe ?5

if you've got a newish motherboard, it will most likely have onboard LAN, which means all you need to buy is the cable.

Don't you mean 2 network cards in one PC, and one in another?

If it was me, I would buy the router. For a beginner in networking the Microsoft router works well, it is easy to set up, and it is secure, right out of the box. If you use programs like Kaaza or anything like that, it will take some configuring. But I just bought a Microsoft router for another user, and it works great. It was $50.00 with a $25.00 rebate.

If you want to be protected from Trojans and Viruses (like blaster) I would not set it up with a hub and crossover cables. You may (if you haven?t already) also invest in virus scan software. That extra $49.99 will save you a lot of headache down the way.
