please if you can thanks. Overheating? jeez good thing i didn't buy it yet. But I've heard good things about lynksys...strange.

I need a broadband wireless router to connect my house with my brother's house next door with the buildings about 75 feet apart...

i will have the router in my house...while he will have a wireless pc card connected for internet access sharing.

do you think to stick with lynksys or go D-link ? i've heard D-link also has problems for some people.

Dude I don't think neither of those routers will get him a good signal from that far.

You'll probably need to invest in a directional antenna or something to get it to go through a house and a half, most people can't even get full coveragine in just thier homes.

And the manual has no mention of the actual range but it does list the transmit power as 15dBm, if that helps.

Not sure it comes down to cost.

I can't remember what the cut off was for Cat 5 without using a repeater, it was either 50 or 100' so that may work, but then you'll need to shield the part of the cable that's outside to protect it from the elements/animals, and not to mention maybe drilling holes in the walls, or running it out the window.

But I also don't think anyone will be able to give you a definaite answer on a wireless router working between two houses unmodified, as there's too many variables besides distance, such as what the walls are made of, cordless phones and such both you or your neighbors may have and other transmissions.

So the wireless way would definately be cosmetically nicer in the end as you'd have no unsightly cable running through your house and between his house, but you may have to invest in more antennas and amp's to get a quality signal on his side.

I'd try and find a place that would let you return the router if possible and give it a shot, but I don't think it'll work without additional equipment.

50-100 meters... not feet

i have a WRT54G and I have no problems reaching my friends house with it.

I am using the Linksys Signal booster with it.

Could you maybe try it without the booster one day? I'm curios about the actual range myself as well, as I've heard alot of bad things as well.

I think 100 meters is right which is about 300 ft. but would be good to use a signal booster if wireless or a repeater if wired.

Don't worry where we are situated...it's just a lawn between the houses. so if i go the wired route. I'll go underground in a PVC pipe into the walls somewhere.....and i think it's less than 75 feet anyway that was a rough estimate.

by the way teh internet access we will be getting is Microwave because where we are it's the only thing fast enough.

What do you think about D-Link equivalent compared to this Lynksys router ?

I only have the WRT54g, never used any other wireless router. I would test the range myself but I live in a room, and all the people who live around me are gone.

But I can assure you in my 6'x20' room the wrt54g works great lol.

i thought linksys was good too, but i have a wrt54g that shuts down when doing long transfers or fast transfers. and i have a wet54g that won't even work with the wrt54g even though they are in the same family. oh, and the wet54g won't take the firmware update, it just kills the router. i'm on my 3rd one right now, which is dead and being sent back.

any reason why you keep using lynksys BroChaos? if this is your 3rd one...why not try D-Link? have you heard any bad things about them ?

well, i spent $140 for the first one, i keep rma'ing the ones after that, and i'm making them pay for shipping, so it's not really costing me. i'd try a different brand, but i've already spent the $140... (this is the wet54g bridge, not the router)

i dunno if d-link is any better or worse, although they are probably who i'll go with if i ever purchase anything like this again. i think all brands are having problems, especially with the technology being fairly new.
