Zoneblitz61
Ive always heard that clean installs are better than upgrades, but no one has ever really explained to me the great advantage of a clean install. What do i gain by clean installing versus having 98 installed then upgrading to XP directly after on a clean hd?
JodyWatts
For one thing, Win9x/ME is built on the 9x kernel. Windows NT/2k/XP are all created on the NT kernel. There would be files (lots) installed by Win9x/ME that would not be needed by NT/2k/XP, but would be left on the HDD. When you get a bunch of DLLs (different versions, even unused ones) your computer will slow down and tend to become unstable. That was taking into account that you did a clean install of Win9x/ME then IMMEDIATELY installed NT/2K/XP. If you upgrade your computer after running on 9x/ME for 2+ months .... multiply the above paragraph by 100x the amount of problems :) !!! Alot of people do an upgrade and their computers work; however, if they did a CLEAN install of XP ... (I believe) they would see a noticeable difference in speed and stability! As you can see ... I am a FIRM believer in CLEAN installs. Yeah it is more of a pain in the frontend .... but in the long run, you will have a cleaner, faster, more stable computer. Draaku
What you get with an upgrade: Windows 98 files still lingering. Driver incompatibility. Crashing, freezing, general slowness. DLL missing. What you get with a clean install: WINDOWS XP very happy. Plenty of free space. WINDOWS XP very happy. Native drivers installed. WINDOWS XP very happy. Machine runs very smoothly. WINDOWS XP very happy. I work at a college in the IT department doing PC support. I've done plenty of clean installs and some upgrades. Out of all the upgrades I've done, maybe a handful have come away clean. In my side consulting job, I always recommend clean install versus upgrade. You will be much happier in the long run. thingsforjason
i wouldn't say PLENTY of free space on a fresh XP install, because of the hog that XP is anyways, but you'll have more free space than if you were to upgrade. who wouldn't want to fdisk and start fresh when going to Windows XP, and get rid of the garbage that is the 9x Kernel? :D that is why we do a clean install. PM5K
I don't know if anyone else mentioned this but: Another thing is software problems. Say on 9x you install something, then upgrade, if NT doesn't like it you'll have problems. On the other hand if you tried to install it on a clean install of NT the OS would prob tell you there are problems with it and to get an updated program etc.
+Elі Subscriber² Posted January 10, 2002 Subscriber² Share Posted January 10, 2002 Clean installation gives you defenately great stability, second it gives you greater speed, one that you ll probably notice from start, it will defenately also give you more space, besides your system will be running the NTFS file system by default and simply not going through the process of changing all your system to NTFS, or just passing you over to XP still on FAT32 wich is LESS secure and slower in most cases. Prior to XP I always just upgraded Windows however last year when for the first time I clean installed ME I noticed the great difference and that was ME, imagine what you get when you clean install XP. In short, If you want stabilty and years of a good working Windows machine backup all the stuff you need, pictures, e mails .exe files, favorites ect and do a clean install, you won't regret it. Want a fast solution and proably be re-installing Windows in a couple of months? just upgrade. Ely
