DocM
IMO another excellent reason to get your tweens vaccinated as it works best if given before they begin experimenting, and we know for a fact that they will. Opinion: the Merck Gardasil vaccine probably gives the best overall protection - it covers more strains. CNN.... The human papillomavirus is contributing to the growing number of head and neck cancers in the United States, according to a new study Monday in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The study found that the number of cases of oropharyngeal cancer ? cancers of the tonsil, back of the mouth (throat) and base of the tongue ? has been on the rise since the mid-1980s. The study suggests that one reason could an increase in the number of people having oral sex resulting in oral human papillomavirus exposure. Researchers say these cancers fall into two categories?those caused by tobacco and alcohol and those caused by the sexually transmitted virus, HPV. They now believe approximately 70% of all oropharyngeal cancers are caused by HPV infection. ?We used to think of oropharyngeal cancer as one cancer,? said senior author Dr. Maura Gillison, The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Columbus. ?Now we know the disease is comprised of two biologically and epidemiologically distinct cancers. This new understanding will increasingly enable us to improve and better personalize care for patients with each form of the disease.? Researchers tested cancer tissue samples from almost 6,000 patients in Hawaii, Iowa and Los Angeles between 1984 and 2004. They found the HPV-positive cancers increased 225% while HPV-negative oropharynx cancers dropped 50%?most likely because of a reduction in smoking and tobacco use. Even so, patients with HPV-positive cancers live longer. >

Yusuf M. Veteran Posted October 4, 2011 Veteran Share Posted October 4, 2011 Vaccines ... Since I stopped taking flu and other vaccines, I feel much better. And that's almost ten years ago. Correlation does not imply causation. The fact that you stopped taking vaccines doesn't necessarily mean you became healthier because of that. Anyway, a vaccine for a virus like this is a good thing. I think genital HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection.

I got vaccinated at school once, and got sooo sick afterward. Some people were not so lucky, they got permanently damaged.
DocM
Some vaccines generate immunity by infecting you with a milder form of a worse disease - example being Edward Jenner giving someone cowpox to innoculate against the much worse smallpox. That was in 1796. Now we've largely moved beyond live to dead organisms and custom made molecules that don't generate disease but just stimulate the immune system to activity, which sometimes has mild symptoms but isn't an illness. I don't know how old you are, but I remember many childhood friends becoming paralyzed or dying from polio, getting seriously ill or dying from measles or chicken pox and other diseases you and your progeny largely don't have to worry about because of those evil vaccines. HPV is responsible for far too many women dying from cervical or genital cancer, and for men from penile and other genitourinary cancers while also being carriers. They probably contracted it when they were young and stupid, and giving them the HPV vaccine before they're sexually active is the best way to prevent it.
