mistical
Alright, First, let me explain to you my ethernet network... I bought a laptop 2 days ago. Specs: Toshiba Satellite P25-S477 Intel Pent 4 2.4Ghz Hyper-Threading 40gb hard drive 512mb ddr ram geforce fx go5200 17.0" widescreen dvd/cdrw integrated 802.11 wireless lan I notice it does have "toshiba wireless lan mini pci card" if anyone needs to know.. I am not at all experienced with wireless right now, that being why I am making this thread. My Actual Question for point of this thread: Now, what I want to buy is something for my network so I can use the wireless capabilities that I have with the laptop and not drag a long cat5 cord with me in the laptop, lol. But, I don't wanna have to buy a wireless router... at least I hope not... I need something cheap...!, IF SOMETHING exists... or maybe even a PCI card that goes into my main pc pci slots and i can connect from my laptop to that? I have no idea if it exists... I wouldn't know what to look for at newegg...etc
Steven
at the least you'll need 1 Wireless PCI Card in AD HOC mode to share the internet from the Host. (my main pc) But the best solution is to loose that netgear switch and get yourself a Wireless Router that way nobody is dependant on you (my main pc) for internet access. Wireless routers come with a built in 4 port wired switch.

Steven
You get the one that is compatible with your built in Wireless card. Check your packing slip or contact the company you bought it from to find out what Frequency it uses. mistical
Well... problem is, my laptop isn't even listed at www.toshiba.com and googleing it ... gets nothing what so ever, so I only have: http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&...rk_10&oid=75678 I see "integrated 802.11b wireless LAN." listed on the site, so I get that one right? :) I was only so far going off what I saw on my laptop stickers.. only thing I had, didn't look through manual bout that specific thing so :p thanks man
Frank
mistical: if the sticker says "integrated 802.11b", you will need a 802.11b card. Why don't you want to go with the wireless router? You can pick one up for about the same price as a decent wireless card, and you will have all of the benefits of the router.

Why don't you want to go with the wireless router? You can pick one up for about the same price as a decent wireless card, and you will have all of the benefits of the router. the sticker on the laptop just says "Integrated 802.11 wireless lan" , but if you go to where I bought it, which was from circuitcity, they tell you on the info it is 802.11b. and the reason why I bought a pci card and such instead is cause of how my network is setup. You notice I have 5 desktop computers up and running... on my switch it only has 4 ports to use, nothing else. on the wireless router, it has 4 ports + 1 coming in for inet use. That doesn't help me at all still :p and I wanna not have to buy a switch or wireless router with more ports at more expensive price when I can just do this: adsl > switch > ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Nvidia network port > then it goes out from 3com network port, and out to the switch. from there, it goes from port to port... I share my internet from my pc, cause I have PPPoE (sbc dsl yahoo), and set it up with its own ip, and all my other pcs connect to my pc to use the net. I don't mind leaving my pc on 24/7, that's what I have done for years already, cause I idle in IRC chat rooms, download, leave AIM on w/ away message when not here, all that stuff, so :p But anywho, I bought the pci card for my desktop already, Linksys WMP11, $59.95 and I get a $10 mail-in rebate, so only costs me 49.95, and free 2nd day shipping, best I could find + cheapest... so :p
Frank
I see why you don't want a router, but on the port issue.... you can always link the switch you already have into the switch on the wireless router. You then wouldn't have to buy the expensive wireless router, but if it isn?t broke....don't fix i:):)
dougkinzinger
Buy this and plug it into your switch. Question though--are your other PC's plugged into the Netgear, or are they plugged DIRECTLY into your PC? I have the cat5 cable from dsl modem to my pc, then since I have dual lan on my motherboard, my other port has a cat5 cable going to the switch, then the other ports heading off to my other pcs. But I'm all set now, I think, have to wait till it arrives and I set it up.
mistical
Hey you guys, I installed it, and I just seem to have tons of problems... I'm sure you have heard of netstumbler, maybe, maybe not, i'm not using that to do it, just to help me, it keeps finding my wireless net and just can't get it to use it. Like, no idea how to even explain all of this, through the other options I can't get anything to work, i think I have it, when I go to use internet or AIM, it just don't work and I'm clueless what to do... On my desktop it is enabled with AC-hoc mode... not sure what else, details, to give yet.
Frank
I believe AC-hoc mode is when you have two wireless cards and you want them to speak to each other. I do not think it is to be used with an access point. Have you tried disabling that?

I want my laptop wireless to speak with my desktop wireless, so then my laptop goes through my desktop then through my desktops ethernet to go to the net :p
mistical
Okay, I believe I am not getting somewhere. Now: I can connect to my desktop from the laptop, and I see the folders that I am sharing. I can NOT use the internet on it yet, and I can not see my other network users that are sharing folders... or even connect to them...
