Memristors are the long sought 4th basic electronic component, the others being resistors, inductors and capacitors. They can be looked at as resistors that can store the last voltage applied to them without the need to be refreshed. Memristors are non-volatile, fast, cheap, can be made today with 5 micron fabrication, can be used to build logic gates, and memory could be built right on a CPU die in a 3D array - yes, it's stackable. Many people think they are going to be a major extension for Moore's Law. NOTE: I mistyped saying they store the voltage. They store a reference to the voltage applied in the form of a variable resistance, meaning in the future a single memristor junction could store far more than just 0 and 1.
