restrictions on dvd playing?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of doing a fundraiser for school by doing an MDTV-Sponsored event which involved renting 3 or so DVDs and screening them on a projection screen we have in the gym, and charging like $2 for admission.

Two questions?

One: what are the restrictions on using rented DVDs for public viewing?

Two: will the MPAA police come and arrest us?

yeah its not legal you would be making money (even though it is non profit) if you got permision ahead of time you could (I wouldnt hold my breath) Hmmm if well if you charged for something like popcorn instead then you wouldnt be making money from the movie but its still muddy LOL

You'd definitely need formal permission, and could get in pretty serious trouble if you go ahead without it. Watch yourself -- word does get around.

If you find older films, maybe even classic Hitchcock or something, getting permission can be a lot easier / less costly.

You might be better off doing a bake sale, hiring a live band for a social function, etc.

Anyway, do not use rented or purchased DVDs for public performance without explicit permission. Very big trouble. If it's a fundraiser / nonprofit, you *may* have minimal problems getting permission.

Heh.. that would defeat the concept behind the school TV station doing a fund raiser ... hm maybe we could do a student film festival instead
