force ALL websites to show HD video

Question

Hey so I am tired of every website showing the lowest quality video that is available. I always have to tell websites (youtube, gamespot, IGN, hulu....) to show me HD video. I am wondering if it's possible to change a setting somewhere that will make everything play with the highest quality by default.

I am running chrome on windows 7 and most of the video seems to be flash so maybe a setting in flash media player?

bandwidth is not a problem so this just makes sense.

thanks.

It just takes a single click to convert to HD.

Wow amazing answer sir. I'm sure the poster didn't know that and will thankyou for actually taking time to post such an informal reply.

As far as I know there is no way to set all sites to default to HD. Even if the browser or an addon had an option for it, it would only work on better known sites as many sites have their own video players with different code etc.

In Youtube settings I have HD switched on, but it only works if I go full screen :s

I am always amazed at people like you, for some, speed and bandwidth IS an issue! Because things are way they are where YOU live does not make is the same for others.

OK I just reread your post and if you mean't that bandwidth for you is not an issue, then my apologies! I would suppose the "default" setting is low is because not everyone had unlimited bandwidth.

Is there a stylish extension for Chrome? If so you might want to check out stylish.org for a script that automatically displays videos in the highest quality, I can't think of any other suggestion?

If you're logged in to YouTube you used to be able to specify HD video playback by default - not I have that I'm only getting it full-screen. Would be nice to at least default to 720p, or at the very very least 480p if wanted. Below that I may as well just draw the individual frames with a block marker.

Not an userstyle but an userscript, there is one, YousableTubeFix which allows, among other things, to select default resolution for youtube videos. Here his the version for chrome: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/57201

There is FlashVideoReplacer that works on other websites and not just Youtube. Although it does much more than just change the default video quality. It completely replaces Flash Player with your player of chose. The videos can be played within the browser or separately in the video player instead. Up to you. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashvideoreplacer/
