Dave Diller
OK, I'm fairly new to setting up a LAN of more than 4 people or so, so I've got a few questions... First off, I invited this guy from Chicago to come. He's got a server that he wants to bring to run games like Halo, Renegade, SC, etc... Is a server really needed? Secondly, he wants to come up and set up a Static IP on my router. My router is on my dads computer, and I really don't want him messing around with it. He says it'll take a day to set up....is that right? He also says that you'll get pings 200-300ms lower than you would if they were normally hooked up over a LAN...but I've not experienced any lag with the 4 player games I've had. Would it lag with 8 people over a 100MBit network? It just seems like he's trying to take over my LAN Party at my house, it's kind of annoying. Is he right about some of this stuff, or won't it make much of a difference?
RogueJawa
um.. yea, if he actually said youll get 200-300ms lower i wouldnt let him anywhere near your comp because theres noway that the pings would be over like 15ms to begin with. Dave Diller
Yeah I'm pretty sure he is thinking about mainly Internet play...but we won't be playing on the net....
liar2
what's so hard about setting up a LAN? plug all computers into the hub/router/switch, start up a server (whoever hosts the game), and go. that's pretty much all that's necessary. nvme
if i were you, i would just tell him he could come if he wanted to, but you were gonna set everything up. it's your place and your party. im trying to figure out how he thinks setting up a static ip on the router is going to decrease latency. last summer, we had a bunch of great lan parties with as many as 18 people. we used all 100mbit hardware and it was great. as for a server... if you're only going to have 8 people playing (no bots) and you have a decent computer or someone else has a pretty decent computer that is there, then that should be more than sufficant. i usually hosted the lans at out parties just because i had the fastest machine (kinda the rule of thumb :) ). have a good lan. Dave Diller
liar, nothing is hard about setting up a LAN. I've done it at least three dozen times over the summer and many times during last school year...however the most we've really had is 4 or 5 people. We've never had a server, and have never bothered with Static IP's. I'm wondering why he wants to set all this stuff up now - nothing is hard, I'm just confused by his decisions. nvme
when i say server, im refering to the person who serves the games...not a dedicated server. you have no need for dedicated server for such a small lan. and you're right, if you already have dynamically assigned ips, there's no need to go and change it. the games will see each other fine. in a worst case senario, you man have to manually join a game.
