Problem with File Associations and opening attachments

Recommended Posts

Just had a computer come in for a customer...some of his attachments are are not working...also having an issue with a computer with Win xp pro ...a lot of the extensions are not associated properly...it keeps having this program called File Cure come up saying it needs to have certain programs associate the programs...I ran a Disk check on it by passmark...it has Micro Trend Micro Titaniam Internet security running in the background and found land stopped only 1 web threat...most likely a virus or malware...most like exactly what would cause this?? What should most likely be done about it?

Plenty of viruses that do that, you'll need to start some full scans running malwarebytes and security essentials and see what those can clean up.

Tip: NEVER trust the customer's resident anti-virus. Using it to scan is pointless, as if it were doing it's job, it wouldn't have let in the infections in the first place. As suggested, Malwarebytes is a good program to start with, and I also recommend Spybot: Search & Destroy. It will pick up a lot of spyware and adware that most anti-virus programs will not.

Oh, and after cleaning out the infections, the file association bugs will likely remain. Go here to fix them:

Figure out which extensions are broken, and download/run the associated registry fixes provided.

On a side note, Trend Micro is a terrible AV, and unless the user has decent internet habits to begin with, I can almost guarantee you any computer running it will be infected.

Try going to the Add/Remove Programs applet in the control panel and double click MS Office to access the repair option. This should restore the file associations.
