Software to easily insert greek / mathematical characters for Windows 7?

Question

Hi,

I regularly type mathematical and Greek characters in Windows 7 and wondered if there was a quick way to insert them (into all types of document, not just MS Office, so the built-in assistant for Office won't apply universally).

I've looked through the character map, although annoyingly the greek characters don't have alt codes (apart from one or two, such as µ). Therefore, I wondered if there was an alternate way or some application that could automate this insertion, since copying and pasting from the character map is far too slow.

All ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Two ideas:

1. Run a program in the background which you can define hot keys or acronyms for special symbols - http://www.phraseexpress.com/

2. Find an on-screen keyboard which lets you customize the layout and add special keys. (I couldn't find any freeware)

Well, you could probably use Math Input Panel. I can't remember if it's installed by default or if all Windows 7 editions come with it.

I've used it a couple of times to insert simple maths into Word, although it's kinda picky, usually requires some corrections (given that I used mouse instead of a pen).
