one321
Is there a Xbox hard drive defrag utility? My roommate has his modded with a 120 GB hard drive and now that we are putting more stuff on it it is starting up slower and running slower. What could be the problem? We were guessing it was the hdd becoming fragmented because even when we turn the mod chip off the Xbox loads into the normal Microsoft dashboard the same slow speed. What do you guys think? ceminess
what kind of hdd is it, it would be because of heat.....maybe.
one321
what kind of hdd is it, it would be because of heat.....maybe. I'm pretty sure it is a 120 GB Seagate 7200 rpm. I don't think it is that though because it could be off for two days and still take a minute or two to start when it was like <10 seconds before. The modded box with new hard drive ran perfectly fast until we started putting more files on the drive.

Briandl79
It's not heat it's fragmentation. A defragger was mentioned some time ago but I wouldn't hold your breath. You'll just have to deal with it, the only other solution I know of is to copy everything from your Xbox to another drive and then copy it all back. Yes, that is an option I told him to try & probably our only option right now. Thanks!
DigitalN.
or you could hook it up to a PC and defrag in Windows

one321
Okay, it was actually something really dumb and we do not know why it started all of a sudden. We figured since the only thing we were changing was adding more files that it was fragmentation. Out of no where we decided to unplug the network cable from the box and it started up in a split second. It worked before when it was plugged into the network so I don't know why it would just start to have network problems. We added a new dashboard but the network worked fine for a while and then just decided to take a dump. Anyway, it's fixed for now but I will still be looking out for that defrag utility whenever they develop it.
