Sidewinder 8
For a long period of time, I have had a 3COM modem, it was a model that was out of date. Now with the way my xbox is, I could run a unshileded cable that was around 200 some feet. If I directly connected it to the modem, I would get a connection up in my room. Now see the only problem with that, is that I have family that wants to use this PC. So I bought a router (Microsoft MN-100 to be specific). It doesnt connect over my long cable through the router so I still have to do it the old fashioned way of direct connnection. That is how my situation was up till today. As of about last christmas, my cable modem has had a hell of a time holding connection for over about 20 mintues. So I had Comcast come out here today to fix it up. They said my 3Com was defective and they game me a Motorola Surfboard Modem. The guy even told me my router might connect through that for the xbox. I had some doubt that it would, so after he left, I gave it a shot. Sure enough, it didnt work. I felt like hitting up a game of Mech Assualt at the time, so I ran downstairs to connect it directly like I used to. I went back up, and it wouldnt even connect directly anymore. I tried it on a 50 foot cable downstairs and it worked. With the way I am right now, I need a connection up in my room. I cannot move the modem upstairs, and I would really not like to have my Xbox downstairs since the 5.1 is in my room. On top of that I am building a PC to put in my room by February, so I really need a connection up there. Talking it over with my mom, I have decided to go Wireless. So I come to you guys here. People that know how wireless is, please explain what I need to buy to use it. But firstly, in the case of the way I am, would wireless work? What do I need to buy? I plan on getting this tommarrow and I know nothing about wireless. I dont know what I should do. Great deal of thanks to anyone willing to help me out. _____________ Sidewinder
John Veteran Posted September 27, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 27, 2003 if you can, return the mn-100 and get an mn-700 (wireless, 802.11g) and the xbox adapter.
Frank
I agree with gameguy, the microsoft routers kick ass, especially for users who aren't experienced with configuring them.
