blocking ports in XP?

Recommended Posts

Hey people

im still havin trouble the Swen virus. Im still getting like 100 emails a day with the virus in it and returned mail ones. Ive checked my machine 10000 times for the virus with my anti-virus and with the removal tools and it doesnt pick up anything but im still getting them.

im assuming i dont hve it, but if i keep getting returned mail it seems lik im still sending it out!?

anyway what i want to try is to block smtp access either on my XP machine or on my Alcatel Speed Touch Pro Modem if anyone knows how? Im stuck i cant work it out on either. I was trying to use the built in XP firewall thingo, but its like 1:30am and its asking what machine the server is on etc. and i coldnt be bothered playing with MS XP crap this late.

anyway if anyone can help me to do it either on XP or on my router that would be great

peeeete

I have seen this happen to a machine I have worked on. There was no virus but she kept getting return email. I formatted the machine just to be safe, but I believe that the virus just got a hold of her email address and was using it to send it out on another infected machine.

you aren't sending anything. it's possible to "spoof" an email address, faking the "from" field. so someone is sending viruses saying it's from you, and you get the return emails.

as to blocking ports, turn on ICF or make sure the firewall on your router is on.

Regardless of you believing it or not, when the SoBig virus was at its peak, I was getting over 1000 infected email messages a day, I was NOT infected still I got hundreds of 'Returned Mail' messages, its NOT you who is sending the messages, they are simply being sent from another infected computer on the internet which is spoofing your email address, Spoofing means they are faking it to make it look as if its you who is sending, so the returned mail will go back to you.
