Removing Audio Tracks from MKV Containers

Question

Hey Guys,

I did have a quick Google around but couldn't find anything conclusive.

Let's say I've got a 5GB MKV File with 2 Audio Tracks and 3 Subtitle Tracks. I want a piece of Software that'll grab said file, strip away the Subtitle Tracks and only leave the 'English' Audio Track.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Chris

Seconded. Quick and easy with this software (specifically the mkvmerge GUI part). I also use it for inserting subtitles and occasionally for fixing MKV files that for one reason or another freeze up Explorer's icon preview.

Hey all,

Sorry to bump this thread. This Software has been fantastic and has really reduced the size of some of these MKVs, now, Most of these files have 5.1 DTS Audio, which I don't need as I don't have any TV's with 5.1 in the house.

Can anyone recommend a piece of software for converting these down to a basic format? 2.0 AAC or similar?

Finally, if I have a 1080p Video File, how would I go about converting this down to 720p?

So basically, hordes of 1080p 5.1 DTS Files need converting to 720p 2.0 Files. Anyone?

Thanks in Advance

Chris

I don't know why you would downgrade personally... just get yourself a nice 1080p TV with 5.1 speakers instead :p

But seriously, if you upgrade in the future then all your video will be low quality and then you will need to upscale or re-rip them

It's the Hardware the files are coming off of that are the issue, PS3 Media Server cannot handle 1080p video on my Server, but 720p plays fine. All TV's are running 1080p etc, additionally at the distance I sit from the TV, there's very very little difference from my point of view, so I'd rather just have everything 720p in the first place, re-ripping will take too long right now.

Doesn't appear to allow me to change the size of the video (1080p > 720p)

Have a look at Freemake, very easy to use. I suggest starting with one video and making sure you're happy with the quality. It uses the GPU which will make conversion faster, but the conversion is less sophisticated and may result in lower quality.

You should look at changing the default audio, not deleting the 5.1 all together.

In MKV Merge, drag and drop your movie.

At the top right, click "Add" or whatever it says.

Add your audio track and where it says "default flag" make this a yes.

Change the 5.1 audio to a no.

Write the file.

This way, you'll be keeping the 5.1 audio and adding the 2.0, in case you ever needed or wanted to go back.

Basically what I want is a way to convert this entire media library to a standardised format.

All H.264, All AAC 2.0 Audio, all 720p Video. I'm surprised I've not found any tools out there that can do this in bulk.

I've looked on MKV Merge for converting to 2.0 Audio and cannot find the functionality.

Handbrake should allow that. Can you detail you do you mean by "Doesn't appear to allow me to change the size of the video (1080p > 720p)". :) (On the 'Picture' tab, change the Anamorphic from 'Strict' to 'Loose'. It even has an AC3 passthru option. I have transcoded many H.264 1080p videos to 720p for viewing on the Zune HD. Handbrake is as easy as it can get for those users uncomfortable directly with the command line x264. If you are comfy with it, you can directly use Windows compiled binary of x264.exe.

If you need converting -> Handbrake.

If you need to remove/add/extract MKV streams -> Mkvtoolnix (with the GUI thingy)

That is ALL you need. Everything else is considered bloatware in my opinion :p

And oh yeah, MPC-HC to play things back. Nothing comes even close in display quality (especially when using Haali or MadVR).

Right, i've given Handbreak another spin, I've not changed any Video Settings other than it wanting to use an MP4 Container, I've changed it to MKV.

On the Audio Tab I've changed the Mixdown to Stereo @ 320Kbps.

Converting now, going to take 3 hours approx. Will do these overnight me thinks.

Any other software recommendations?

FormatFactory. At the options tab you'll be able to set the bitrate:

1200 kB for .mkv is more than enough. 1600 can be another option but it will increase file size unnecessarily.

Ah, always use 2 pass for retaining greater quality.

I do this all the time with handbrake. You have to go the video tab and change it. Maybe you can't by default on some of the presets?
