0 philcruicks
VLC media player is my go to, I'm yet to find a file it can't play out of the box, and seems to be quite low on resources http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

0 +John. Subscriber¹ Posted November 17, 2011 Subscriber¹ Share Posted November 17, 2011 MPlayer. Far better resource management. The features as well make for a better overall product. For example, when you have multiple files in a folder that are part of a series, the player will scan that folder and automatically determine what the next episode would be. After your file has finished playing it will move onto the next one! Also it picks up where you left off on each file, so if you quit halfway through you can instantly pick it up the next time you open the file. 0 Reacon
MPC combined with http://www.cccp-project.net/ will allow you to play anything ever. Very low impact player, but also very functional.
0 TheLegendOfMart
MPC-HC, comes with all the hardware accelerated codecs preinstalled so you dont have to install any of those awful codec packs.

0 neoraptor
you have to find a video player that supports hardware acceleration for YOUR VIDEOCARD http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/DXVASupport.html : Unfortunately the MPC-HC decoder only supports the "bitstream mode" at this stage, which means that only the most recent graphic cards are supported : nVidia series 8(9)xxx for H.264 only ATI Radeon HD series for H.264 and VC-1 decoding

0 migo
Does your screen even natively support 720P? If not, can you get the videos at 480P or 576i?
0 max22
VLC Player most likely. There may be another one out there with even less cpu usage but I doubt by much.
